2000-2010 Strategic PlanAppendix C: Report of the Millennium Commission - About the College of EducationThe College of Education at the University of Georgia is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the nation. Based on the College's annual report of 1996-1997, there were approximately 218 faculty, 405 graduate assistants, and 153 staff serving a student body of over 2,500 undergraduates and nearly 1,900 graduate students. Four units comprise the College of Education, the School of Health and Human Performance, the School of Leadership and Lifelong Learning, the School of Professional Studies, and the School of Teacher Education which include 20 departments. According to the College's 1996 - 1997 annual report, its mission is as follows: The College provides programs of research-based teaching and learning and the environment to foster such programs. The College strives to provide a curriculum that offers a balance between academic excellence and practical skills, and one that prepares students for the diverse and contemporary work environments they will face. The College is concerned with the advancement of understanding and with the application of principles of learning and teaching under optimal conditions. The College encourages learning through the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary for continued human development and as informed by the needs of society. Our mission also includes assisting pre-kindergarten - 12 schools in the improvement of teaching and learning in their setting, as well as assisting agencies and organizations in creating ongoing learning opportunities in their communities. Over the past few years, the college has gained wide recognition as one of the country's foremost educational institutions. Its rankings in both popular and professional publications consistently place the college among top tier public and private schools. This is also reflected in the ability of the college to attract external funding for research, instruction and service projects. The College attracts high quality students from around the state, nation, and world.
