1930s

Naomi Shearouse Alderman (BSEd 1935) and her husband were awarded the 2001 Treutlen Award for community service by the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce. Now retired, Mrs. Alderman was a teacher for 40 years. She now volunteers for “Meals on Wheels,” Hospital Auxiliary and Hospice care.

Martha E. Lee (BSEd 1939, MEd 1974), At age 85, Ms. Lee remains very active in the Presbyterian church, Foley Women’s Club, and Republican Club of South Alabama. She was a Coast Guard SPAR, the women’s reserve branch, during World War II, taught school for 25 years and was a legal secretary for a number of years.

1950s

Dorothy Middleton Houston (BSEd 1958, MEd 1970) has received the With Our Youth Award honoring Cobb-Marietta Retired Educators Association presented by the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA) – AARP’s educator community. Houston accepted the award in Washington, D.C., on September 30, 2002.

1960s

The Rev. Richard Gray Houston (MEd 1963, EdS 1970) has served as Webmaster of student.org – a Baptist student ministry available in the U.S. and Canada – for the past five years.

Betty J. Benson (MEd 1968, EdS 1970) retired from the Forsyth County School System in 1998. She retired as an Assistant Superintendent. Benson still does volunteer work within the system.

1970s

Amanda Keith Bailey (MEd 1971) retired from the Atlanta Board of Education in 1991. She was also a teacher at Dean Rusk Elementary School.

1980s

Donna R. Bishop (BSEd 1982, MEd 1993), principal of Monroe Primary School in the Walton County School District, received the National Distinguished Title I School Award for 2002, as well as the 2002 Georgia Distinguished Title I School Award.

1990s

Angela Robbins Anderson (MEd 1993) was named Registrar at East Carolina University in 2001. She has one daughter, Jordan Patricia Anderson, born July 2, 2002.
