Practicum and Student Teaching

General Curriculum

On Campus BSED General Curriculum

Throughout the General Curriculum program of study, students are enrolled in quality, inclusive field placements. During their first semester, students will complete 9 hours per week of practicum work, completing assignments that are linked to their coursework. During the second semester, students will be in the field for 10 hours per week, and then hours will increase to 12 per week during the third semester. The final semester will consist of full-time student teaching with a certified teacher. Throughout the four semesters students will have a placement in each of the following age ranges: Elementary (PK-5), Middle Grades (6-8), High School (9-12). Student teaching will occur at one of these levels, with the assignment lasting 14 weeks with a certified teacher in General Curriculum. Students are expected to be in the field full-time for student teaching (approximately 35 hours per week), mirroring all responsibilities of the mentor teacher. This includes instruction, collaborating with general educators, faculty meetings, and any other duty assigned to the mentor teacher (e.g. bus duty, cafeteria duty). Students will also attend all IEP meetings held during the semester.

Placements for the General Curriculum program are made in Clarke and surrounding counties. Students are expected to have reliable transportation. Students should expect to travel outside of Clarke County for at least one of their practicum placements.

Field Placements are arranged through the College of Education’s Student Services department. All students must have a criminal background check and Tort Liability Insurance completed through the Student Services department in order to be given a field placement. Online BSED General Curriculum

Students enrolled in the BSED online program are required to complete three semesters of practicum and one semester of student teaching in quality inclusive field placements.  With each practicum, the number of hours required to be in the classroom increases. For example, practicum A = 10 hours/week (fall I), practicum B = 15 hours/week (spring I), practicum C = 20 hours/week (fall II).  The final semester (spring II) will consist of full time student teaching with a certified teacher. Throughout the five semesters, students will have a placement in each of the following levels:  Elementary (PK- 5); Middle Grades (6-8), and High School (9-12).

Because supervision of students is done via a combination of on-site and video observations, students completing field experience in the Special Education Undergraduate Online program can be placed in classrooms across the state of Georgia. An appropriate placement is on in which the student is working with special education students who primarily follow the general curriculum.  This will most often be co-teaching, collaboration, or inclusion models.  Resource settings are also common.  The special education students most frequently served in these settings include those with behavior disorders (BD), learning disabilities (LD), mild intellectual disability (MID) and some students with autism or Asperger’s (ASD or AS).

Field Placements are arranged through the College of Education’s Student Services department. All students must have a criminal background check and Tort Liability Insurance completed through the Student Services department in order to be given a field placement.
