Program of Study

Ed.S.

The program of study for the Ed.S. degree is planned jointly by the student and his/her advisor based on prior study, future goals, and within the framework of the program of study. This framework is intended to develop advanced knowledge and skills beyond master’s level preparation. Courses taken during the master’s degree may not be used to satisfy the Ed. S. program requirements.

Prerequisites to Ed.S. Degree

Students entering the Ed.S. program with master’s level preparation in some teaching or related field other than special education will be required to complete 15 hours of core graduate level knowledge in special education prior to completing the 30 hour Ed.S. program of study. These 15 hours include:

SPED 7010 Advanced Assessment – 3 hours

SPED 7230 Advanced Applied Behavior Analysis – 3 hours
SPED Seminar (choose one from autism spectrum disorders, behavioral disorders, early childhood, intellectual disabilities, or learning disabilities  ) – 3 hours
SPED (Methods) – 3 hours
SPED 7440 Practicum – 3 hours

Time Limit
All requirements for the Ed.S. degree must be completed within six years, beginning with the first semester in which the student registers. .

Exit Criteria
Prior to completion of the Ed. S. degree, students must satisfactorily defend their Applied Project (SPED 7650) to their faculty advisory committee. This project is a demonstration of the student’s application of advanced knowledge and skills developed during the Ed.S. program of study. The committee is to be composed of three members, 2 of whom must be graduate faculty members. One of the 3 committee members may be from a program other than special education.
