The Ed.S. degree program provides advanced study for those preparing for advanced teaching, service, and leadership positions in special education and related fields. The Ed.S. Program of Study includes 30 hours of coursework, half of which is highly individualized to the student’s career objectives. This allows students to specialize in advanced knowledge and skills in numerous special education topical areas and across the life-span, and to pursue multidisciplinary goals. Areas of emphasis in the Ed.S. programs of study are exemplified by study in autism spectrum disorders, behavioral disorders, early childhood, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and learning disabilities.
The Ed.S. program of study may also be designed to meet requirements for Georgia teacher certification in special education for the general or adapted curriculum, and for various “cognitive” levels (grade levels). Georgia certification also requires passing scores on the appropriate Georgia Assessments for the Certification of The Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) is a post-master’s degree program in the Special Education program in the Department of Communication Sciences and Special Education. Federal personnel preparation grants support training in autism spectrum disorders (COPPA, CAATT).
Note that coursework completed as part of this Ed.S. degree cannot be used to satisfy the requirements of a doctoral degree at The University of Georgia.
