Special EducationDoctoral ProgramProgram Requirements Residency The granting of the doctoral degree presupposes a residency requirement for full time study of one academic year (i.e. two consecutive semesters of 6 semester hours of coursework). The residency requirement must be completed prior to admission to candidacy. Time Limit All requirements for the doctoral degree, except the dissertation and final oral examination, must be completed within a period of six years. This time requirement dates from the first registration of a student for graduate courses on his/her program of study. A candidate for a doctoral degree who fails to take the final oral examination within five years after passing the preliminary examinations, and being admitted to candidacy, will be required to take another preliminary examination and must be admitted to candidacy a second time. Advisory Committee Before the completion of 18 semester hours, the student for a doctoral degree shall form an advisory committee consisting of five members from the graduate faculty. The major professor and two other advisory committee members must be from The Department of Special Education. Final approval of the committee composition rests with the Dean of The Graduate School. The advisory committee, in consultation with the student, is charged with planning the student's program of study, arranging the preliminary written and oral examinations, approving a subject for the dissertation, and evaluating the dissertation presentation and defense. The committee will advise the student of the human subjects review procedure and other departmental and university requirements. Tentative Program Special Education Core (12 Hours)
