Special Education
An emphasis in Birth through Five is for individuals interested in teaching young children, both with and without disabilities. Training in this program will prepare pre-service teachers to teach in inclusive early learning, preschool, PreK and Kindergarten programs, along with early intervention (0-3) and preschool special education (3-5) programs. Students will earn a B.S.Ed. in Special Education with an emphasis in Birth through Five and Preschool Special Education certification. This program is currently offered at the undergraduate level only.
An emphasis in Adapted Curriculum is for individuals interested in teaching students with low incidence (moderate to severe) disabilities, including autism and developmental disabilities, who follow an adapted curriculum. This emphasis is offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and prepares teachers to teach in self-contained, resource, and inclusion P-12 programs.
An emphasis in General Curriculum is for individuals interested in teaching students with high-incidence (mild) disabilities who are primarily following the general curriculum. This emphasis is offered at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and prepares teachers to work in resource and collaborative settings.
Training in this emphasis area will prepare pre-service teachers to work in collaboration, inclusion or resource models. The special education students who are most frequently served in these settings will include those with behavior disorders (BD), learning disabilities, (LD), mild intellectual disabilities (MID) and some students with autism or Asperger’s (ASD or AS). Students will earn a B.S.Ed. in Special Education with an emphasis and certification in General Curriculum. Upon completion of the General Curriculum emphasis program of study, students will also be highly qualified in the content area of language arts.
Advanced degrees in the Special Education Program at the University of Georgia include the Educational Specialist Degree (EDS) and The Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) The EDS is intended for practitioners who want advanced preparation in special education.
