The Center has had a long history of successful outreach programs with cardiac patients dating back to 1980. The expanded Center offers programs to a more diverse population of chronically diseased individuals as well as healthy adults. The latest equipment and techniques are used to evaluate health and fitness and prescribe exercise. The program is designed for the individual who is interested in a supervised, structured and individualized exercise programming, and for those interested in group fitness classes. Our program emphasizes functional fitness exercises designed to improve health/fitness, independent living, and body composition. The service programs include the following:
- Ongoing supervised exercise programs for healthy, chronically diseased or disabled faculty, staff and community members.
- Health assessments include the following:
- Health Risk Appraisal
- Cardiovascular Fitness (risk for cardiovascular disease)
- Blood Pressure Assessment
- Maximal Treadmill Exercise Test “stress test” (ECG interpretation; physician supervision)
- Body Composition and Bone Health (risk for obesity, sarcopenia and osteoporosis)
- Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance and Physical Function (risk for physical disability)
- Flexibility (risk for physical disability and low back pain)
- Continuing education workshops or presentations on topics related to physical activity and health.
