at UGA Awarded ARCS® Foundation Scholarships
Two College of Education doctoral students in kinesiology, Christopher Black and Edward Mahoney, were among nine students at the University of Georgia recently awarded scholarships from the Atlanta chapter of the Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS®) Foundation, Inc., in recognition of their studies in the biomedical and health sciences.

Graduate Student Receives $42,000 NIH Grant
Graduate student Jason Davidow has committed his life to understanding what makes a person stutter. The California native personally knows the impact the speech disorder can have on one's life. He and his brother have had to overcome stuttering their entire lives.

Davidow will get a chance to further his research into stuttering after receiving a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award, a two-year $42,016 grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Doctoral Student Receives Prestigious $24,000 College Board Research Grant
Graduate student Jennifer Hartwig is one of only five young scholars in the nation to be awarded the prestigious College Board Research Grant for the 2005-06 academic year. The grant awards $24,000 to fund the recipient’s research.

Jennifer Coats, a senior from Augusta majoring in elementary education, has been awarded the 51st Paul Tappan Harwell Scholarship. She received an award of $750 and will use the money during her student teaching semester in spring 2006.

Two College of Education students are among only a dozen across the nation to receive national scholarships from Kappa Delta Epsilon, an honorary professional education fraternity.

UGA College of Education Names Pate Outstanding Honor Student

    Laura Dinsmore, a senior from Ila majoring in elementary education, has been awarded the 50th Paul Tappan Harwell Scholarship. She received an award of $750 and will use the money during her student teaching semester in spring 2005.

Doctoral Candidate Awarded $20,000 National Fellowship
    Jamilia Blake
, a doctoral candidate in UGA's College of Education, is one of only three students in the nation awarded a $20,000 Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Fellowship from the American Psychological Foundation.

Three Receive Top Awards in First Graduate Student Research Conference
    Three doctoral students were awarded top prizes for their work in the College of Education's first annual Graduate Student Research Conference.
    Lori Aultman, a doctoral student in educational psychology, received the first place prize of $300. Ju Sung Jun, a doctoral student in adult education, won $200 for second place. The third place prize $100 went to Jamie Calkin, a doctoral student in science education. Honorable mentions of $50 were awarded to Haixia Xu, Steve Bickmore and Steve Broglio.

Two Doctoral Students Receive Clinical Psychology Internships in U.S. Air Force
    Two doctoral students in the College of Education's psychology training program are preparing to begin an unusual internship this summer – they’re joining the U.S. Air Force.
    Catherine Callender and Rhett Puder are among only 24 interns selected from across the country to begin year-long residencies in clinical psychology with Air Force psychologists. They will rotate in four areas: outpatient mental health care, clinical health psychology, neuropsychology and primary care.

Jennifer Lease, a 2003 graduate of UGA’s Student Affairs Administration doctoral program, received the Outstanding Dissertation Award at the Southern Association for College Student Affairs Conference.

Hammett Named Bamford-Lahey Scholar -- Again

 
    Lisa Hammett, a doctoral student in communication sciences and disorders, was one of only six students recently chosen from around the world as a Bamford-Lahey Scholar for 2003. It is the second year in a row that Hammett has received the distinguished award.

   Two doctoral students in adult education, Janice Saturday and Kate Monaghan, have received 2003 Irene and Curtis Ulmer Scholarships.

    Rachel Lovern, a senior from Jasper, has been awarded the 48th Paul Tappan Harwell Scholarship by the department of elementary education.  She received an award of $750 and will use the money during her student teaching semester in spring 2004.

65 Teachers Complete Online Certification
   A group of 65 teachers from 17 Georgia counties were the first to complete an innovative online certification program in special education when the College of Education held its fall convocation Dec. 14.
