COE Faculty, Students Among Those Celebrated at UGA's Annual Honors Day
     The University of Georgia pays tribute to its best students, teachers, advisers and mentors, including several at the College of Education, at the annual Honors Day program April 26.

Smith Receives College of Education’s 2006 Staff Award for Excellence
     June Smith
, business manager for the College of Education’s business office, has received the college’s 2006 Staff Award for Excellence.
     Smith was presented a plaque and a $1,200 cash award in ceremonies April 14 at Flinchum’s Phoenix. First runner-up, Demetrius Smith, academic advisor in the department of educational psychology and instructional technology, was awarded $750, and second runner-up, Dianne Fields, administrative assistant for the department of language and literacy education, received $300.

Thornton Receives Outstanding Advisor/Mentor Award
     Frieda Thornton
, a student advisor in the College of Education, and Sidney Thompson, a faculty member in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, will receive the 2006 Outstanding Advisor/Mentor Award.
     The award is presented each spring to recognize faculty and staff members for excellence in advising undergraduate students on selection of classes and course of study, assisting them with academic problems, and providing guidance on related matters such as decisions about graduate school and careers.

Koballa Receives Outstanding Mentor Award from National Science Education Group
     Thomas R. Koballa, Jr.
, a professor in the department of mathematics and science education, has received the 2006 Outstanding Mentor Award from the Association of Science Teacher Education (ASTE).
    Koballa was recognized by the national group for his significant contribution to the professional development of science teachers, most notably mentoring them. The ASTE recognizes only one individual each year for the honor.

Powell Receives National Award for Leadership, Advocacy of Youth Camps
    
Faculty member Gwynn Powell has been a camper, counselor, lifeguard and administrator of youth camps since she was eight years old. Now, she is being recognized nationally for her leadership and dedication to advancing those camps.
    Powell, an assistant professor in the department of counseling and human development services, has received the National Honor Award from the American Camp Association (ACA) in recognition of her work as a volunteer, mentor and seasonal staff educator with Camp Counselor USA (CCUSA), both nationally and internationally.

Cervero Receives Prestigious 2005 ACHE Leadership Award
    
Professor of adult education Ronald Cervero has received one of higher education's most honorable lifetime achievement awards for his leadership in adult and continuing education.
    The Association for Continuing Higher Education (ACHE) recently recognized Cervero with the 2005 Leadership Award as “an individual who has made extraordinary contributions to the general field of continuing higher education nationally.”

Zepeda Receives 'Master Professor' Award from UCEA
    Sally J. Zepeda
was recently recognized as one of the top educational leadership professors among Research I institutions in the United States and Canada.
    Zepeda, an associate professor and graduate coordinator in the department of lifelong education, administration, and policy, received the University Council for Educational Administration's (UCEA) inaugural Master Professor Award for her work as an educational leader and advocate for students, program improvement, and her research in the field of educational administration and policy.

Cahnmann Receives Honorable Mention in Worldwide Peace Poetry Contest
College of Education faculty member Melisa Cahnmann is a teacher by day and poet by night. Winning awards for her poetry is something she should be used to by now.
Cahnmann, an assistant professor in language and literacy education, recently received honorable mention in the 2005 Barbara Mandigo Kelly Peace Poetry Contest.

Delgado-Romero Receives Emerging Professional Award
Edward Delgado-Romero
, an associate professor in the department of counseling and human development services, has received a national award from the American Psychology Association (APA) for his work with Latino and other ethnic minority issues.

National Review Board Receives Award
A national review board that provides faculty with external peer evaluations, which is co-directed by Lorilee Sandmann, associate professor of lifelong education, administration, and policy, has won an award from the University Continuing Education Association (UCEA).

LLE Prof JoBeth Allen Receives National Public School Service Award, $10,000 Prize for Research
JoBeth Allen, a co-director of UGA’s collaborative partnership with Clarke County Schools and the Athens-Clarke community, has received a national award for her service work with public schools.

Ruona Receives Early Career Scholar Award
COE professor Wendy Ruona, considered one of the rising young stars in her field, has received the 2005 Early Career Scholar Award from the Academy of Human Resource Development (HRD).

Honored alumni included Kimberly Halstead of Perry; Michael Gwatney, of McCaysville; Marc E. Fey, of Kansas City, KS.; Cecil Reynolds of Bastrop, TX.; Damon Evans and Sylvia Hutchinson, both of Athens.
 
Educational Administration and Policy Program Recognizes Leaders
The College of Education's educational administration and policy program recognized the achievements of two alumni, Gale Hulme and Alvin Wilbanks, and former faculty member Edward F. Pajak at its recent annual awards luncheon.

COE Pair Receives 2005 Snyder Exemplary Service Award
Two COE faculty members, Jepkorir Rose Chepyator-Thomson and Norman Thomson, were named recipients of the 2005 Snyder Exemplary Service Award for their contributions to the study of Africa.

Talmadge Guy Among Three Receiving President's Fulfilling the Dream Award
Talmadge Guy, a professor of adult education, was one of three recipients of the President's Fulfilling the Dream Award during the annual Freedom Breakfast honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., hosted by UGA, the Athens-Clarke County Government and the Clarke County School District on January 14.

Karen H. Jones, a professor of occupational studies in the University of Georgia's College of Education, has been named the 2005 national Outstanding Career and Technical Educator.

Paul Schempp, director of UGA's Sport Instruction Research Laboratory, was recently named the 2004 Distinguished Scholar by The International Center for Performance Excellence at West Virginia University.

The Empowered Youth Programs (EYP), created by Deryl Bailey, an assistant professor of counseling and human development services, has been named the recipient of the 2004 Multicultural Program Award by the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME).

Samdahl Receives National Excellence in Teaching Award

Diane Samdahl, an associate professor in recreation and leisure studies, has received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Society of Park and Recreation Educators (SPRE).

COE professor Shawn Glynn and doctoral graduate Nita Paris were named the 2004 recipients of the Georgia Association of Teacher Educators (GATE) Distinguished Research Award.

Fecho Receives Award For Book on Language, Race and Culture
College of Education professor Bob Fecho has received a prestigious national award for a book he wrote which focuses on his work as a teacher in a working-class African-American high school.

Jones Named Outstanding Career and Technical Educator for SE
    Karen H. Jones, a professor of occupational studies in the University of Georgia College of Education, has been named Outstanding Educator for the region by the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE).
    She is one of only five educators in the nation now being considered for the ACTE's national Outstanding Educator award, which will be presented December 9 at the group's annual convention in Las Vegas.

Glickman Receives John Dewey Award
    Carl Glickman, professor emeritus of education, recently received the John Dewey Award from the Vermont Society for the Study of Education for his “outstanding contributions to the education of young people in America.”

DeJoy Receives National Award for Paper
    David DeJoy, a professor of health promotion and behavior, has received a national award recognizing outstanding, original research in the field of occupational safety and health.

Oliver Receives Diversity Award
    Jenny Penney Oliver, director of academic initiatives, was one of four faculty members honored for their work by UGA's Office of Institutional Diversity.

    Linda Campbell,
a professor of counseling and human development services in UGA's College of Education, has been elected president of the American Psychological Association's (APA) Division of State and Provincial Psychological Association Affairs (Division 31).

Cooper Receives National Teaching Award in Student Affairs
    Diane L. Cooper, associate professor and head of UGA’s department of counseling and human development services, has received the Outstanding Contributions to Student Affairs Through Teaching Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).

Oliver Elected to Board of State Multicultural Education Group
    Jenny Penney Oliver, director of academic initiatives at the College of Education, has been elected to the board of directors of the Georgia chapter of the National Association for Multicultural Education (GA-NAME). Oliver, one of three co-directors for the groundbreaking Clarke County School District/ UGA/Athens Community Partnership, was elected to a three-year term on the nine-member statewide board.

First runner-up, DeAnna Palmer, senior secretary in reading education, was awarded $750, and second runner-up, Judy Harper, office manager for the department of communication sciences and disorders, received $300.

College of Education professor Deryl Bailey, whose mentoring program aimed at developing and nurturing academic and social excellence in young African-American males has gained state and national recognition, will be honored again for his groundbreaking work – this time locally.

    College of Education professor Thomas C. Reeves has been selected as one of the first two Fellows of the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE), an international professional association.

"Gentlemen on the Move," a project founded by Deryl Bailey, assistant professor of counseling and human development, has been named 2004 Multicultural Program of the Year by a statewide group.

Courtenay Named to Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame
Bradley C. Courtenay, whose leadership over the past 25 years transformed the University of Georgia into a national and international leader in adult education, is being recognized for his contributions to the field with his induction into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame.

Named African Hero

Rose Chepyator-Thomson, an associate professor of physical education and sport studies, has been named African Hero 2003-2004 by Ohio University’s African Student Union for her achievements as a scholar, athlete and parent. She is the first woman to be honored by the student group.

Neuharth-Pritchett Appointed to NCATE Board
Stacey Neuharth-Pritchett, an associate professor of elementary education, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Board of Examiners for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).


Profs Receive Award for Research Paper
Research on an indigenous educational system of an endangered culture in Kenya by   Norman Thomson and Rose Chepyator-Thomson  was recently recognized by the UGA chapter of Sigma Xi.

   Jeremy Kilpatrick, Regents Professor of mathematics education, was recently recognized by the Georgia State Senate with a resolution honoring him for his many years of contribution to the advancement of mathematics.

   Douglas Kleiber, professor of recreation and leisure studies, will be nationally recognized this month for research excellence during a career that has spanned three decades.

Vail Reappointed to State ICC

Cynthia O. Vail, an associate professor in special education, has been reappointed to Georgia’s state Interagency Coordinating Council for Early Intervention (ICC).
The ICC advises the Department of Human Resources (DHR), the Division of Public Health and other agencies responsible for serving children, from birth to age three, with developmental delays and disabilities and their families, in providing a family-centered, comprehensive service delivery system which promotes child development and family functioning.

Hattie Sanford Named Employee of Quarter
Hattie Sanford, ground floor custodian at Aderhold Hall, was recently named Employee of the Year Runnerup for 2002.
In November, Sanford was named the Employee of the Quarter by the University of Georgia's Custodial Services,Physical Plant Division.

Mewborn Inducted into Illinois State U. Education Hall of Fame
Denise Mewborn, an associate professor in mathematics education, was recently inducted into the Illinois State University College of Education’s Hall of Fame.

Counseling Profs Receive National Honors
Two COE professors, Richard Hayes and John Dagley, recently received national awards in recognition of contributions to their fields of study from the Association for Specailists in Group Work.

Majors Receives 2002 Promising Researcher Award
A College of Education faculty member, Yolanda J. Majors, was one of only three scholars in the nation to be named 2002 winners of the Promising Researcher Award by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

Johnson-Bailey Receives National Award For Book

Mary M. Frasier, director of urban initiatives and professor of educational psychology, has been named the 2002 Aderhold Distinguished Professor at UGA’s College of Education.

Two College of Education faculty members - Gary Dudley of exercise science and Andy Horne of counseling - have been named UGA Distinguished Research Professors.

Horne Receives Yeany Research Award
Andy Horne, who has gained an international reputation as one of  the top experts in bullying and behavior problems in children, has received the College’s 2002 Russell H. Yeany, Jr. Research Award.

Castenell Named U. Of Illinois Distinguished Alumni
Louis A. Castenell Jr., dean of UGA’s College of Education, will receive a 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois where he earned a doctorate in educational psychology.
Castenell, who also serves as UGA’s acting associate provost for Institutional Diversity, will receive the honor bestowed by UI’s Education Alumni Association at Urbana-Champaign, IL., on April 13.

Frances Hensley, director of the Georgia Systemic Teacher Education Program (GSTEP), was one of several UGA faculty recently honored with 2002 Walter Barnard Hill Awards for Distinguished Achievement in Public Service and Outreach.

Linda Campbell, an associate professor of counseling psychology,  was appointed to the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists in January 2002.

Ron Cervero, professor and department head of adult education, was one of three University of Georgia researchers to receive the 2001 Imogene Okes Award for outstanding research from the American Association of Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE).
 
 
 

Counseling Faculty Receive National, Regional Honors
Several faculty members in the College of Education's department of counseling and human development services have received national, regional and local prestigious awards over the past few months.
Linda Campbell received the Distinguished Psychologist Award from the American Psychological Association (APA)'s Division 29 and Andy Horne received the Outstanding Research of the Year Award from the APA's Division 51. Other faculty members receiving honors were Diane Cooper, Deryl Bailey and Brian Glaser.
 
 

Atiles Named GAYC Educator of the Year
Julia Reguero de Atiles, a UGA faculty member who coordinates cohorts of teacher students specializing in the education of very young children, was recently named the Georgia Association on Young Children's (GAYC) Educator of the Year for 2001.

Ron Butchart, a professor in social foundations of education, recently delivered the presidential address at the History of Education Society's annual meeting, held this year at Yale University.

Derrick P. Alridge, assistant professor in social foundations of education, has been awarded a National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship for the 2001-2002 academic year. 
 

Butchart Receives Award For Research
Ron Butchart, professor in social foundations of education, has received an award from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University to conduct research this summer at the Schlesinger Library in Cambridge, MA.
 
 
 

Alvermann Lectures at U. of Victoria
Donna Alvermann, research professor in reading education, presented a lecture titled, "Developing Critical Awareness of Popular Media Texts: Practices, Pitfalls, and Possibilities" as the Lansdowne Lecturer at the University of Victoria in British Columbia April 3-9.

Steve Stahl, director of UGA's Reading Clinic in the College of Education, has received a national award for an article he wrote about research on different learning styles.

Stan Brassie, head of UGA's physical education and sports studies department, has received the 2001 Sport Management Council Award from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). 
 
 

Hebert Receives Early Scholar Award
Thomas P. Hebert, an assistant professor in educational psychology, has received the prestigious Early Scholar Award from the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC).

Wilson Honored for Lifetime Achievement
Jim Wilson, a nationally recognized professor of mathematics education at the University of Georgia, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Service to Mathematics Education from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
The NCTM presented Wilson with the award April 6 during the its 79th annual meeting in Orlando, Fl., before some 18,000 fellow mathematics educators.

Fors Named toCommission on Men's Health
A University of Georgia health education expert hopes his participation over the next two years on a new state commission will help to improve the quality of life for Georgia's male population.
Stu Fors, professor and department head of health promotion and behavior in UGA's College of Education, is one of 11 people recently appointed to the newly established Governor's Commission on Men's Health.

Karen Watkins, professor of adult education and interim director of the School of Leadership and Lifelong Learning has been selected as a "Distinguished Graduate" by the University of Texas' College of Education.

Alridge Named NEH Fellow
Derrick P. Alridge was selected this past summer as a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow to study the history of the civil rights movement at the W.E.B. Du Bois Center at Harvard.  He pursued research for his book on W. E. B. Du Bois and for his course on education and the civil rights movement.
 

Pate National Service Learning Award Finalist
Elizabeth Pate, an associate professor in elementary education, was named one of 10 finalists for the 2000 Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service Learning.
 
 
 
 

Brassie Named To International Sport Panel
Stan Brassie has been named to the 10-member International Commission for the Study of University Sport based in Brussels.
Associated with the World University Games, the commission sponsors an international scientific congress and a student- athlete forum. Brassie also was elected recently as a secretary on the United States Collegiate Sports Council, a sub-council of the United States Olympic Committee.

Blase Article Wins Outstanding Paper
An article co-authored by Jo Blase and Joseph Blase titled "Implementation of Shared Governance for Instructional Improvement: Principals' Perspectives," in the Journal of Educational Administration, was selected by the editorial team of the journal as the "Outstanding Paper" of the 1999 issue of the publication.

UGA Teacher-Mentor Program Wins Top GATE Award  An innovative UGA College of Education student-teaching program that requires its students to spend a full academic year working alongside a mentor teacher in a local school has won one of the top awards given by the Georgia Association of Teacher Educators (GATE).

1999 COE Faculty Awards

Three College of Education faculty members were presented faculty awards during the annual fall faculty meeting on Sept. 22. The recipients were: (L-R) Denise Glynn, Thomas Cooney and Deborah Tippins. Glynn, a professor of elementary education won the Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence; Cooney, a professor of math education won the Russell H. Yeany Award for Outstanding Cumulative Research; and Tippins, an associate professor in science and elementary education, won the Faculty Fellow Award.



UGA New Zealand Alumnus on 1999 Honours List
Colin Knight, a l982 alumnus, was appointed by the Queen to the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the l999 New Year Honours "for services to education."
 


Watkins Wins Outstanding Scholar of Year Award

Karen Watkins was recently named winner of the 1998 Outstanding Scholar-of-the-Year award, one of the highest honors accorded by the Academy of Human Resource Development.

Smagorinsky Wins AERA Early Career Award

Peter Smagorinsky was recently honored with the Raymond B. Cattell Early Career Award for Programmatic Research at the AERA's annual meeting.

Baumgartner Receives National Award

Ted Baumgartner received an Honor Award, the highest award given, from the American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness (AAALF) at its national convention this month.

COE's Ross Honored with Walter B. Hill Award

Sally Hudson Ross is one of five University of Georgia faculty  honored in 1999 with prestigious Walter B. Hill awards.

Swan Wins National Award For Special Ed Leadership

Bill Swan has been selected to receive a prestigious national award honoring him for his work in the field of special education administration.

Riley Wins National Award For Outstanding Science Program

Joseph P. Riley received the 1999 Gustav Ohaus/NSTA Award for Innovations in Elementary Science Teaching.

Cervero receives Okes Award
Ronald Cervero is a recent co-recipient of the 1998 Imogene Okes Award for Outstanding and Continuing Research in Adult Education.

Baha'is Honor COE's Multicultural Task Force The UGA College of Education's Multicultural Task Force has been recognized by the Athens chapter of the Baha'i Faith for its work in promoting diversity in education.
