"HE STOOD UP FOR US":  CURT FLOOD AND HIS QUEST TO BREAK DOWN RACIAL BARRIERS AND STRUCTURAL INEQUITY

Michael Lomax, assistant professor of P.E. and Sports Studies, will make a presentation on 1960s baseball star Curt Flood at this month’s Multicultural Task Force Seminar on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
In his presentation, Lomax will analyze Flood’s quest for equal opportunity to compete within organized baseball and American society, without the debilitating restriction of caste.
Both his exploits on the field and entrepreneurial endeavors highlighted Flood’s dream of “freedom” that was as American as Horatio Alger – social acceptance and upward mobility within the very centers of corporate power.  The presentation will also attempt to explain why Curt Flood, who by 1968 was recognized as the best centerfielder in baseball and a good businessman off the field,  would risk losing it all by challenging the baseball establishment.
    Lomax’s presentation will be from 12:15 - 1:15 p.m. at G-23 in Aderhold Hall.
