Torrance Center Announces Spring
Challenge Explosions
The University of Georgia's Torrance Center for Creative Studies is
calling all challengers for their three-hour workshops for both art and
science will be held on Saturday, March 20 and Saturday, April 10.
Budding young artists from four years old through the 8th
grade can learn some wonderful, user friendly, watercolor techniques to
portray cycles in "As The World Turns... The Artist's View." Students
will take an artist's look at the seasons of the year, times of day or
metamorphosis of insects and seeds. Discover how to apply washes, and how
to mix tones and tints to create different effects. Students taking both
Saturdays of art will learn more advanced techniques on the second Saturday,
while first timers will learn the basics.
Aspiring young scientists will examine the daily, lunar and annual cycles
in time and how matter cycles back and forth between the nonliving and
living parts of the environment in "The Circle of Life." Students
will examine such cycles as they study water, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen.
They'll discover the life cycles of fruit flies and mealworms as they view
them under the microscope.
The Challenge Explosion is designed to help children explore and develop
their creative potential. Over the past 20 years, thousands of youngsters
have participated in hundreds of innovative projects and experiences.
The workshops are open for students four years old through the 8th
grade and are held from 9 a.m. to noon. Tuition is $19 per course, per
child and all sessions are held on the UGA campus in Aderhold Hall. Applications
and fees are due by Wednesday, March 3, 1999.
