UGA New Zealand Alumnus
on 1999 Honours List
Colin Knight, who received his Ed.D. from the University of Georgia
in l982 in Geographic Education, was appointed by the Queen to the New
Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the l999 New Year Honours "for services
to education."
Formal investiture will take place in Wellington in mid-April. Dr. and
Mrs. Knight make their home in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Knight was principal of Christchurch Teachers College, which became
the College of Education, from l986 until he retired in 1995. Following
the New Zealand educational reforms of the late 1980s, he led the college
through the restructuring which took the college from state control to
almost total self-management. Knight attributed the honor "to the diverse
range of people who play a part in education."
Knight began his career as a school teacher of geography and was a senior
lecturer in geography at Christchurch Teachers College. He came to the
United States on two Fulbright exchanges, including a term as visiting
professor of geography at UGA in 1969. From 1973 to l986 he served as Senior
Inspector of Secondary Schools, Acting Director of Schools, and Regional
Superintendent of Schools.
Author of school texts in geography and published articles, Knight also
served as chairman of the New Zealand Council for Educational Research.
His doctoral dissertation was "An International Study of the Relationships
Between Geographic Knowledge of Students and their Attitude to Other Nationalities."
