Latino Conference for Georgia School Counselors February 17

Nearly 150 participants from around the state are expected to attend the School Counselors as Educational Leaders for Georgia Latino K-12 Students conference on February 17 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

The conference, jointly sponsored by the UGA College of Education's Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education (CLASE) and department of counseling and human development services, will focus on teaching Georgia school counselors how to better aid their schools in improving education for Latino students.

Panelists including national experts, UGA faculty and practitioners in the counseling field, will address topics such as: fostering Latino parent engagement, college admissions and scholarship support, successful program models for English learners, and effective strategies for counseling Latino students and families.

Lisa Flores, an assistant professor of education and co-director of the Center for Multicultural Research, Training and Consultation at the University of Missouri in Columbia, will be the keynote speaker at the conference. Flores will discuss her research on supporting and understanding the education and career development of Mexican-American students.

Graduate students in the department of counseling and human development services will be able to attend the conference free of charge through support provided by a Scholarship of Engagement (SEGUE) grant from the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach.

CLASE is an educational resource center providing professional development and resources for K-12 educators working with Latinos statewide. CLASE was established in 2003 with the goal to improve the education of Latinos by raising awareness, providing high-quality information and professional development opportunities for school personnel, and by creatively leveraging university, school and community resources to foster the achievement of Latinos in Georgia.
