![]() Scholar-in-residence Carl Glickman named to steering committee of the national Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools
The mission of the Campaign is to renew the historic role of America's schools in building a healthy democracy (www.civicmissionofschools.org). The steering committee is the policy-setting body for the Campaign and is composed of heads of many the leading civic, education, and service organizations in the United States. The campaign is headed by former U.S. Congressman David Skaggs and co-chaired by former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and past Gov. Roy Romer of Colorado, who is now superintendent of the Los Angeles, California School District. Skaggs served the state of Colorado as U.S. representative for 12 years, and three terms in the Colorado House, the last two as Minority Leader. Glickman formerly served on the National Commission for Service Learning (chaired by then U.S. Sen. John Glenn, D-Ohio). He is the author of 13 books on school leadership and the public purpose of schools. His book, Revolutionizing America's Schools, has been acclaimed as one of the seminal works on the integral relationship of democracy and public education. Glickman was a professor of education at UGA for more than two decades where he founded and chaired the Georgia League of Professional Schools (a nationally validated network of K-12 schools devoted to democratic learning of all students). In 1997, he received the highest faculty career award of the University for bringing, “stature and distinction” to the mission of the University, and students honored him as the faculty member who had “contributed most to their lives, inside and outside the classroom.” In addition to his career at UGA, he has held appointments at the University of Virginia, Goddard College, the University of Vermont, the Ohio State University, and most recently, held the first Mitte Endowed Chair in Education at Texas State University.
