![]() Speech and Hearing Clinic Hosts Open House October 31 The Open House will feature a tour of the facility on the fifth floor of the College of Education's Aderhold Hall, led by clinic director Carol Ann Raymond. Free speech and hearing screenings will follow. Visitors can observe student clinicians working with community children with disabilities such as language delays and disorders, stuttering, memory, language and attention disorders associated with brain injury, laryngectomy rehabilitation, and central auditory processing disorders. Free hearing screenings, voice analyses and otoacoustic emissions tests will be given by student clinicians. The UGA Speech and Hearing Clinic is an essential part of the College of Education's communication sciences and disorders program, providing mandatory clinical training for the master's degree in speech-language pathology (SLP) – the entry-level degree to practice in this profession. While training its students and providing their essential practicum, the clinic serves a large variety of patrons – from infants to the elderly – and receives payment on a sliding-scale basis. In fact, if it weren't for this policy, many children and adults in the area might go without treatment, as these services may otherwise be cost-prohibitive to them. During the 2004-05 academic year, the clinic provided free screenings to more than 1,600 children and adults through screening events at various locations. These services allow early identification of hearing, speech, language and swallowing problems so that appropriate intervention can be recommended or provided. Louis Castenell, dean of the College of Education will welcome the group of Open House visitors which is expected to include UGA Provost Arnett Mace, state Sen. Brian P. Kemp (R-District 46), Rep. Jane Kidd (D-District 115), Athens-Clarke Mayor Heidi Davison, St. Mary's and ARMC hospital administrators. The UGA Communication Sciences and Disorders Advisory Committee includes Margaret Banner Allen, Robert E. Argo, Jr., Joan D. Berryman, Ed.D., Marilynn Cary, Peggy Cole, Irene Cordell, Martha Henderson, Chuck Hunt, Sue Lindstrom, Richard Maggiore, Pete McCommons, Ray Neal, Ed.D., Alysson Pohl, Jane Seaton and Todd Story.
