College of Education Professor Emeritus Ted Miller Honored
The Ted K. Miller Achievement of Excellence Award, presented for the first time this year to The University of North Texas, is considered the highest honor bestowed by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS). It recognizes outstanding accomplishments in advancing standards of practice and quality assurance in educational programs and services in higher education with the goal of enhancing student learning and development. Throughout his 30-year career as a faculty member in UGA's department of counseling and human development services, Miller was a leader in creating and shaping student affairs and development programs here and throughout the nation. He was one of the founding members of CAS and served as its president for a decade (1979-89). He also served as publications editor for CAS until his retirement in 2004. CAS has been the preeminent force for promoting standards in student affairs, services and development programs since its inception in 1979. These standards respond to real-time student needs, the requirements of sound pedagogy and the effective management of 30 functional areas, consistent with institutional missions. Miller's accomplishments in the field are evident in the leadership he demonstrated throughout his career. He was the first president of the Georgia College Personnel Association (GCPA, 1969-70) and president of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA, 1975-76). He was a member of the board of directors of the American Personnel and Guidance Association (APGA, 1979-82) and served on the APGA executive committee (1981-82) and on the ACPA executive council (1979-82). He also represented the ACPA on the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) from 1981-87 and served a three-year term on the board of trustees of the ACPA Educational Leadership Foundation. Miller co-authored or edited 10 professional books that helped define the field of student affairs and development. These included: The Future of Student Affairs [with J. Prince in 1976], Students Helping Students [with S. Ender & S. Saunders in 1979], Developmental Approaches to Academic Advising [with R. Winston & S. Ender in 1982], Administration and Leadership in Student Affairs [with R. Winston and W. Mendenhall in 1983], Developmental Academic Advising [with R. Winston, S. Ender, T. Grites & Associates in 1984], Promoting Student Development Through Intentionally Structured Groups [with R. Winston, W. Bonney, & J. Dagley in 1988], Administration and Leadership in Student Affairs [revised 2nd edition with Roger Winston in 1991], Using Professional Standards in Student Affairs [with W. Bryan & R. Winston in 1991], and The CAS Book of Professional Standards for Higher Education [1997, 1999, 2001 and 2003]. He has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career including the first Mel Hardee Award for Outstanding Achievement and Contribution to the College Student Personnel Profession in 1976 from the Southern Association of College Student Affairs (SACSA). He also received the first Professional of the Year Award from GCPA in 1980, another award which has now been named in his honor. He received the ACPA Professional Service Award in 1981 and both the ACPA Annuit Coeptis Senior Professional Award and the ACPA President's Award in 1986. He was elected an ACPA Senior Scholar in 1986 and received the Robert H. Shaffer Award for Academic Excellence as a Graduate Faculty Member by the National Association of Student Affairs Administrators (NASPA) in 1992. He received the prestigious ACPA Contribution to Knowledge Award in 1997. Miller received his Ed.D. in counseling and student personnel services from the University of Florida. He retired from UGA in 1997. Wednesday, June 8, 2005 Writer: Katherine Dodd, 706/542-5889, katdodd@uga.edu |
