COE Honors Professors for Research, Teaching and Mentoring

The University of Georgia College of Education recognized several professors for excellence in research, teaching and mentoring during its annual Spring Celebration held on April 28 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education.


Aderhold Distinguished Professor

Bradley Courtenay
, an associate professor of lifelong education, administration and policy, was named Aderhold Distinguished Professor for exemplary contributions in teaching, research and service. The faculty member receiving the honor holds the title for one academic year and receives a $4,000 cash award. Only professors with five years or more on the UGA faculty are eligible.

Courtenay served as head of the department of adult education at UGA for 20 years (1981-2001), while leading two major W.K. Kellogg Foundation grants. His leadership helped transform the university into a national and international leader in adult education.

He also led the development of three innovative programs including the first on-line degree at UGA – a master's program in adult education, the Ed.D. program for leaders of Georgia 's technical colleges (in collaboration with two other departments) and the collaborative Ed.D. program with Fort Valley State University.

Ira E. Aaron Award

Michelle Commeyras
, a professor in language and literacy education, received the Ira E. Aaron Award for Teaching Excellence and Collegiality. The recipient of the award, who must be a full-time tenured faculty, receives a $3,000 instructional grant.

Commeyras has served as head of the reading education program since 2004. She was a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Botswana . She joined the UGA faculty in 1991.







Carl Glickman Faculty Fellow Award


Derrick Alridge
, an associate professor in workforce education, leadership and social foundations, received the Carl Glickman Faculty Fellow Award. This award, which includes a cash award of $1,000 and a $2,000 grant for professional development, recognizes distinguished accomplishments and potential for future contributions in fulfilling the mission of the university through teaching, research, and service. Faculty at the associate level, including academic and service professionals, are eligible.

Alridge was named one of 10 outstanding young African-American scholars in the nation featured in the January edition of Black Issues in Higher Education. He was named a National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow in 2001-02 and was a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow in 2000. He joined the UGA faculty in 1997.


Russell H. Yeany Jr. Research Award

Martha Carr, an associate professor of educational psychology and instructional technology received the Russell H. Yeany Jr. Research Award. The award recognizes a tenure-track faculty members' outstanding cumulative research. It includes a $1,000 cash award and a $2,000 grant for professional development.

Carr, a research fellow for UGA's Institute of Behavioral Research , has also served as coordinator of the Applied Cognition and Development program since 1998. She joined the UGA faculty 1989.






Donald O. Schneider Award for Mentoring

Gretchen Thomas, a professor in educational psychology and instructional technology and Janet Truluck, a professor in lifelong education, administration and policy received Donald O. Schneider Awards for Mentoring.

The award recognizes the work of schools and community-based professionals and non-tenure career track faculty engaged in mentoring of graduate or undergraduate students in the College. It includes a $2,000 allowance for professional travel or development.






D. Keith Osborn Award for Teaching Excellence

Melissa Cahnmann, an assistant professor in language and literacy education and Paul Schutz, an associate professor in educational psychology and instructional technology received the Faculty Senate D. Keith Osborn Award for Teaching Excellence. The award recognizes full-time tenure track or tenured faculty and includes a instructional grant of $2,000.







Outstanding Teaching Awards



COE Faculty who received Outstanding Teaching awards at UGA's Honor Day on April 27 were Josh Dayton, lifelong education, administration and policy; Thomas Herbert, educational psychology and instructional technology; Gwynn Powell, counseling and human development services; Kathryn Roulston, lifelong education, administration and policy; Elizabeth St. Pierre, language and literacy education and Sally Zepeda, lifelong education, administration and policy.


Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award

Janice Fournillier, of Student Services, received the COE's Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Advisor Award. The award was established in 2004 and the recipient receives $500.
