Power Publishes New Book on Art of Southeastern Indians

Alumna Susan C. Power, a professor of art at Marshall University, has released a new book titled, "Early Art of the Southeastern Indians: Feathered Serpents & Winged Beings."

The book takes a comprehensive look at Southeastern Indian art from prehistoric times to 1600 A.D. Power dissects some of the most skillfully created native art in North America to uncover the rich, symbolic meanings in each piece.

The book is the culmination of 10 years of intensive research and writing. It combines Power's initial thesis and dissertation work with the study of Indian artifacts in museums throughout the U.S. and abroad. It is published by The University of Georgia Press. Powers has a second manuscript near completion and will be writing a book about Cherokee art history during the next academic year.

Power, a Georgia native served as the State Director of Arts and Humanities for the Georgia Department of Education prior to joining the Marshall University faculty in 1991. Powers holds bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees from the UGA. She received her doctorate in education in 1982.
