Monaghan, Saturday Receive 2003 Ulmer Scholarships
Two doctoral students in adult education, Janice Saturday and
Kate Monaghan, have received the 2003 Irene and Curtis Ulmer Scholarship.Saturday, a lifelong resident of Georgia, is currently making final changes on her dissertation, “The Influence of Early Life Experiences on Adult Learning Groups.” She expects to graduate in December. She received the Outstanding Student Research Award at the 2002 Midwest research conference for her paper, “Psychodynamic Perspectives on Adult Learning Groups.” She began the doctoral program in 2000 after serving as an elementary school principal in Effingham Public Schools from 1996-98. Saturday earned an EdS in administration from Georgia Southern, an MEd in early childhood from Armstrong Atlantic University, and a BS in elementary education from Georgia Southern University. Monaghan, a native of Pennsylvania, is finishing her dissertation titled, “Critical Management Studies Courses: Do They Make a Difference in Managers’ Philosophy and Practice?” She expects to graduate in May. She worked in a variety of roles before entering the doctoral program in 2000. She spent five years as a Vice President/Controller at Illinois Bank, 10 years as a business and educational consultant and three years as a business faculty member in Illinois and Pennsylvania. Monaghan received her MBA in management and her BS in accounting from Shippensburg University. The Irene and Curtis Ulmer Scholarship in Adult Education was established in 2000 as an annual award given to an outstanding doctoral student. The one-year stipend is designed to support students in their tuition, fees, and other expenses. Awards may also be used for students’ research and travel to professional conferences. The Ulmers have been members of the UGA community since the late 1960s. Curtis was head of the department of adult education from 1967-81 and continued on the faculty until 1986, when he was named professor emeritus. Irene was an advisor and instructor in the Career Planning and Placement Department from 1968 until her retirement in 1983.
