Article by Prof, Student Receives National Award

A COE professor and one of his doctoral students have received a national award for an article they co-wrote for a professional journal.

Peter Smagorinsky,
a professor of language education and doctoral student Tara Johnson, were selected as recipients of the Janet Emig Award for 2003 by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).  Andrea Lakly, a former UGA student, now a teacher at Chattahoochee High School in Alpharetta, GA., also contributed to the article.

The award is given annually for the article published in English Education that most contributes to educators’ thinking about English teacher education and most informs their research.

The article, “Acquiescence, Accommodation, and Resistance in Learning to Teach within a Prescribed Curriculum,” was published in the April 2002 issue of the journal. The award will be presented at the NCTE annual conference in San Francisco, Calif., Nov. 20-25.
