Library Fire Touches COE Faculty, Students

The University of Georgia’s Main Library is reopening for Fall semester just three weeks after a July 23 fire but the second floor of the annex, where the blaze began and which housed the federal document repository, remains closed for repairs.
Most damage on this floor was done to United Nations documents, government documents microfiche collection, and parts of the Serials Set, according to library officials.
Collections that were housed in the second floor annex have been moved off site for cleaning.  Of particular interest to College of Education faculty and students are:
•    paper copies of Department of Education documents
•    paper copies of state of Georgia documents
•    books and journals with GV call numbers (sports and recreation), and
•    books and journals with L-LC call numbers (education, history of education, educational theory, and what the Library of Congress calls “special aspects of education,” which includes subjects like home schooling, vocational education, special education, and adult education).
Anyone planning to do research in these areas should consult the Libraries web site at www.libs.uga.edu for the latest information on availability of materials.
Not affected by the fire were ERIC documents on microfiche, electronic access to government documents, and databases in education like ERIC and  Education Abstracts Full-Text, available to the UGA community through GALILEO.  UGA police arrested Jason Allen Nelms, 19, a visitor to campus, on July 29 and charged him with first-degree arson. He is being held at the Clarke County Jail.
