Burtons Attend Peabody Awards

Maxine Hubbard-Burton and her husband, Robert, of Athens were the honored guests of the College of Education at the 62nd Annual George Foster Peabody Awards held May 19, 2003 in New York City.

Mrs. Burton received her BS in elementary education from the College in 1972 and her MSED in 1978.

While teaching, Mrs. Burton became involved in the flower and gift business.  In 1982, she founded Flowers, Inc. Balloons® as the balloon division of a retail and wholesale florist (Flowers, Inc.). The company has become the nation's leading supplier of balloons and coordinating gift products. With an international customer base, more than 10,000 different products, and 350 employees, the company is now more than 20 years old.

Mrs. Burton created the Hubbard-Burton International Scholarship Fund, which supports education majors that wish to experience student teaching abroad and do not have the resources to do so otherwise.  The Burton’s daughter, Rachael, is also a College of Education graduate.

The Burtons enjoyed spending time with other UGA guests such as Coach Vince and Barbara Dooley and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Arnett Mace and his wife, Barbara.

Thirty-one awards were given out at this year’s awards luncheon, once again held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.  For more on the annual Peabody Awards, please visit: http://www.peabody.uga.edu/
