Mewborn Inducted into Illinois State U. Education Hall of Fame

Denise Mewborn, an associate professor in mathematics education, was recently inducted into the Illinois State University College of Education’s Hall of Fame.

The college recognized the recipients for extraordinary contributions to education in leadership, service, practice, scholarship, productivity and innovation.

Mewborn, who joined the UGA faculty as an assistant professor in 1995, received her bachelor’s in elementary education and master’s in mathematics from Illinois State University in Normal, IL. She received her PhD in mathematics education from UGA.

At UGA, she teaches courses mostly focused on elementary mathematics education and has consulted with Clarke County Schools and other area school districts. Her research interests include preservice elementary teachers’ sense-making processes in classroom situations and elementary teachers’ content knowledge and its impact on instruction.

Mewborn has received the UGA College of Education’s D. Keith Osborn Faculty Senate Award for Teaching Excellence and the Lilly Teaching Fellow Award.

She will be soon adding local school board member to her resume after she ran unopposed for the District 1 seat on the Clarke County Board of Education in the August 2002 primary elections.
