Thompson Receives 47th Harwell Scholarship
Tiffany Thompson, a senior from Macon, has been awarded
the 47th Paul Tappan Harwell Scholarship by the department of elementary
education. She received an award of $750 and will use the money during
her student teaching semester in spring 2003.
The scholarship is funded through a $25,000 donation
made in 1983 by Donna Harwell Odum, a UGA alumna who now resides in Franklin,
N.C., in honor of her late husband who also graduated UGA, with a degree
in business administration. The Harwell family stipulated that the
fund would provide scholarships for students in the College of Education
majoring in elementary (early childhood) education.
The scholarship is awarded each year, based equally
on financial need and academic achievement. Each applicant must submit
an application form, a personal statement, and three letters of recommendation.
A committee of faculty members from elementary education makes the final
decision. Application forms are made available to students two semesters
before their student teaching experience.
Alumni and friends wishing to assist worthy students
seeking to become teachers of young children may make donations to increase
this fund. Checks should be made out to the University of Georgia
Foundation and designated for the Paul Tappan Harwell Scholarship Fund
(#4S7250). Checks should be sent to the following address: University
of Georgia Foundation, Alumni House, University of Georgia, Athens, GA.
30602.
