Two Counseling Profs Receive National Honors

    Two COE professors, Richard Hayes and John Dagley, recently received national awards in recognition of contributions to their fields of study from the Association for Specailists in Group Work.

    Hayes, former head of the department of counseling and human development services and a Fulbright scholar in Japan, received the ASGW's highest honor, the Eminent Career Award.

    Hayes was commended for his visionary leadership in the field of group work over the past 20 years. He has served as president of ASGW and is an ASGW fellow. He chaired the first ASGW futures committee, founded the Illinois state division of ASGW, initiated the first women’s interest group meeting while president, initiated the development of the first set of ethical standards, initiated the first national conference and served as chair or co-chair of the program committee for the first five national conferences.

    Hayes’ research interests in constructivism, group process and organizational development, consultation, international issues in counseling and human development, democratic education, and school-based interventions.

    Dagley, current head and graduate coordinator of counseling and human development, was one of six scholars named 2002 ASGW Fellows.

    He was recognized for his contribution in teaching, research and writing about an array of issues impacting counseling and the schools. He was a founding member of the ASGW. Dagley’s research interests in scale construction and instrument development, family constellation variables, career development issues, and construct of encouragement.
