Castenell To Receive U. Of Illinois Distinguished Alumni Award Louis A. Castenell Jr., dean of UGA’s College of Education, will receive a 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois where he earned a doctorate in educational psychology. Castenell, who also serves as UGA’s acting associate provost for Institutional Diversity, will receive the honor bestowed by UI’s Education Alumni Association at Urbana-Champaign, IL., on April 13. The education dean was recently named to the board of directors of the American Council on Education (ACE), has been selected to top leadership positions in national education organizations in each of the last three years. In 2001, Castenell served as chair of the board of directors of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), the largest and most recognized organization of colleges and universities that prepare 85 percent of new teachers entering the nation’s schools each year. Two years ago, he served on the board of directors of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), a prestigious education reform organization, known for its National Board Certification of teachers – a voluntary, performance-based assessment of a teacher's knowledge, teaching ability and skills as measured against high standards for accomplished teaching.
