Stahl Receives AERA Award for Article on Learning Styles

Steve Stahl, director of UGA's Reading Clinic in the College of Education, has received a national award for an article he wrote about research on different learning styles.

Stahl, a professor of reading education, received the "Research into Practice" Award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) at its annual conference April 12.

Stahl was recognized for an article he wrote in 1999 titled "Different Strokes for Different Folks? A Critique of Learning Styles." The article appeared in American Educator, a magazine published by the American Federation of Teachers. The award is given annually for an article which communicates research findings to a practitioner audience.

Stahl, a UGA faculty member since 1990, primarily researches areas of beginning reading instruction, but recently has been concentrating on early word recognition and fluency development. He has taught a number of different courses in reading education, including undergraduate methods classes and the psychology of reading, as well as classes related to the UGA Reading Clinic, which he has directed for more than a decade.

Stahl is also co-director of the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement, a U.S. Department of Education-funded research center housed at the University of Michigan. He is currently directing a collaborative research project, funded by a $5 million grant from the National Institutes of Child Health, to confirm his theories on improving the reading fluency of young children.

Previously, Stahl has been awarded the Harold E. Mitzel Award for an article published in the Journal of Educational Research and was a Noted Scholar at the University of British Columbia in the summer of 1999.

Stahl received his doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, a master's in special education from Boston University and a bachelor's in English from Colgate University.
