UGA ADULT ED PROFESSOR ONE OF A DOZEN SCHOLARS ATTENDING UNESCO WORKSHOP ON DEMOCRACY IN KIEV, UKRAINE

A College of Education faculty member is one of a dozen international scholars invited by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to a workshop on democracy and lifelong learning Nov. 26-Dec. 1 in Kiev, Ukraine

Robert J. Hill, an assistant professor in adult education in the College's School of Leadership and Lifelong Learning, is attending the workshop, the first of a three-phase process to explore how various worldwide experiments in education for democracy can be shared and used as learning tools.

The second phase will involve an international seminar in May 2002 in which participants will examine:

  • Building and revitalizing democracy through lifelong learning (includes education and learning-related activities on culture of peace, conflict resolution, the role of social movements and civil society participation).
  • Strengthening people's participation
"Analysis and broad dissemination of these lessons will hopefully contribute to more creative practices of lifelong learning and adult education in other parts of the world that addresses democratization, critically needed in our increasingly violent world today," said Hill.

The third phase, to begin in June 2002, will consist of dissemination of the results of the project.

Hill's contribution will be his focus on new social movement learning as a form of democratic participation. His research explores the role of non-government organizations in

fostering education for freedom and social integration, specifically with political movements which focus on the environment, lesbian and gay issues, peace, women, civil rights and direct action.

" I focus on how grassroots adult learning within these movements influences policy making," he said.
