Sandlin Receives First Ulmer Scholarship in Adult Education

Jennifer Sandlin, a doctoral student in adult education, (C), has received the first annual Irene and Curtis Ulmer Scholarship.  Here, former adult education department head Curtis Ulmer and his wife, Irene, a former UGA career counselor, pose with Sandlin.

Sandlin, who has a master's degree in anthropology from the University of New Mexico, will complete her dissertation this year. She has a bachelor's degree from Millsaps College and has been a private literacy tutor and instructor in several literacy programs. Prior to coming to UGA, she was assistant curator of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe, N.M.

The Ulmer Scholarship, which provides $1,000 for an outstanding doctoral student in adult education, was established by Curtis Ulmer and his wife, Irene, members of the UGA community for 15 years. Dr. Ulmer was head of the department of adult education from 1967 to 1981 and after his retirement was named professor emeritus. Mrs. Ulmer was a career counselor in the career planning and placement department at the university from 1968 until her retirement in 1983.
