Former University of Georgia basketball star Teresa Edwards - the only American basketball player, male or female, to compete in five Olympics - spoke to a class of College of Education students recently.
Edwards, a four-time Gold Medal winner, was invited to speak to students in the undergraduate History of Sport class as part of a required group presentation on a particular historical period. The group, led by Ron Wetherbee, chose to examine the African-American sporting experience in the post-World War II era.
Miss Edwards shared her experiences as an African-American female athlete in late 20th century America, and her candid portrayal of that experience provided invaluable insights. Moreover, Miss Edwards' presentation exemplified the overall African-American struggle for self-determination, self-improvement, self-help and freedom.
Other group members included Lashanda Harper, Christine Sullivan, Jamie
Tilley, Tammy Permenter, Jason Delinsky, and Tim Lalaian.
