NSSLHA Chapter Wins National Honor

The COE's chapter of the National Student Speech, Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA) recently received NSSLHA Chapter Honors for 1999.

The chapter, made up mostly of undergraduate students in the College of Education's department of communication science & disorders, has been extremely active, exhibiting creativeness and commitment in their fund-raising, social and educational activities, according to Jean M. Novak, a NSSLHA Executive Council consultant from San Jose State University.

"Educationally, they have had a series of guest speakers presenting on various topics in the field of speech-language pathology and a panel of graduate students presenting to juniors on how to prepare for graduate school, how to write a thesis, and career options available in speech-language pathology and audiology. A peer-advising program has been established for undergraduate students and a newsletter is published several times a year," said Novak.

The chapter was also praised for raising money for the "NSSLHA Loves" campaign, Operation Smile and the Multiple Sclerosis Walk. In addition, the chapter donated clothing and other items to the Salvation Army and held a Senior Citizen Appreciation Drive.
