New Faculty? Students are not the only ones who may need an orientation to the Libraries. If you are new faculty or if your department will be welcoming new faculty in the next semester, please contact Nadine Cohen from the Main Library or Carla Wilson Buss from the College of Education/Libraries Curriculum Materials Library to schedule a time to meet.
-
Faculty & Grad Student Meetings? Nadine & Carla are also available to come to your new Grad Student Orientations and Faculty Meetings to talk, briefly, about the Libraries. We can also talk about our pet dogs, but usually we are invited to talk about the Libraries. Your choice.

Confused About E-books? What can you download? CAN you download from ebooks? How do you “check out” an e-book? For pity’s sake, how do you even FIND them? Well, we have some answers for you. Amber Prentiss, Reference Librarian in the Miller Learning Center, has put together a very handy guide to E-books. It may not answer every single question you may have, but it answers a whole lot of them. If not, contact Amber.

ERIC Documents Update: Access to full text in the ERIC Collection continues to increase as restricted PDFs are cleared and restored online on a weekly basis, and newly indexed full-text materials are added daily. As of May 30, 2013 nearly 71,400 PDFs were available online for download, including all releasable materials published from 2005-forward and peer-reviewed full-text materials.
ERIC will continue to accept requests to restore access to older materials via the online form, and maintain the updated list of released documents. The Spotlight and alert areas on the ERIC home page at eric.ed.gov are kept up-to-date to keep you informed of the latest developments.
-
Please remember: The Libraries own the microfiche for ERIC documents until 2004. These are stored, by ERIC number (that six-digit number in the reference) in the basement of the Main Library. You can copy & scan these documents and there are staff members in the basement to assist you. It’s a lot quicker to take the Orbit bus to the Main Library than to wait several weeks for your restoration request to be processed. Just sayin’.

K-12 GALILEO Password: The K-12 GALILEO Community’s password will change on July 1st. If you need it, ask Carla Wilson Buss or join the GALILEO email list.

ATHFest Tours of the Special Collections Library: If you missed the guided tours of the Special Collections Library when they first opened or if you would just like to go back for more, you’re in luck. To celebrate AThFest, the staff of the Special Collections Library will offer free guided tours of the exhibits, Thursday, June 20th through Saturday, June 22nd at 2:00pm. One exhibit, which opened May 1st and runs until December 15th, is “Now & Then: 1973”. Some of us, of course, can just open our high school yearbooks to see 1973, but if a trip to the attic isn’t in your future, consider a trip to Special Collections. It’s not as hot and will have fewer spiders clinging to things.

Lost & Found: People visit the CML and often leave little offerings for us. Their own books or sunglasses, for example. While this is a nice thought, you can visit the Libraries without donating anything to us. These items are sent down to 232 Aderhold, OIT’s Media Services Office, where they have a lovely collection of items which have become separated from their owners. Two current offerings are: The Great Railroad Race: The Diary of Libby West and a pair of groovy (see above) sunglasses. Please mention this to your students or friends and help reunite book and owner.

ERIC Documents: More on the on-going saga of the ERIC Documents. ERIC has restored online access to more than 21,000 full-text PDFs with publication dates from 2005-2013. Hope springs eternal. We also kept our microfiche collection, housed in the basement of the Main Library, so you can also get access to EDs (1966-2004) from ERIC that way. Ask if you have questions about this.
-
Government Documents: Hallie Pritchett, Government Documents & Maps Librarian, announces that as of May 3rd, the final phase of the U.S. government documents collection move is complete. For complete information, please see the Hours section of the Libraries’ Homepage.

Don’t Forget About Book drops: When you have an armful of books and the Libraries are closed, you don’t have to lug that stack back to your car. The CML, Main & Science Libraries all have book drops where you can return the materials you’ve finished with. This may be too much library geekiness, but you’ll be happy to know that when Libraries staff retrieve materials from the book drops, the return date is backdated to the last day we were open and your account is kept up-to-date. You may also return any University System book to any of the UGA Libraries and those books will find their way home. Interlibrary Loan materials, however MUST be returned to the library where you picked up the material.
-
GALILEO Password: Get ready. The GALILEO password changes frequently in the summer to accommodate the various sessions. The quickest way to get the password is to visit the Libraries’ Homepage>>GALILEO Password.

Proxy Borrowers—Cut Your Schlepping Time: If you are going to be working with new research assistants, you may want to consider establishing a Proxy Account A Proxy Account lets you send someone to pick up materials in your name. The materials are charged to your account, but you don’t have to do the schlepping. We can process these accounts in the CML, saving you even more time.
