New Books & Libraries’ News

  • New Page for EndNote and Refworks Information: The Libraries’ Homepage, www.libs.uga.edu, has a newly redesigned link for information on RefWorks and EndNote. If you’re interested in using a citation management software package, take a look at this page to get started. You can also click on the right side of the page for an appointment for a training session.
  • PIN for Library Accounts: If you’re having trouble receiving your PIN for your Library Account, please check your junk mail folder. Your PIN should be in your regular mailbox, but sometimes it goes to the junk mail folder. Also, the Libraries cannot access your PIN. We can reset it for you, but we do not see it. If you have problems with this, please contact the CML at 706.542.2957 or Access Services at 706.542.3256.
  • Library Instruction Sessions: There is still plenty of time to schedule a Library Instruction Session for your classes. Individual research help is also available. Please contact Nadine Cohen (706.542.6708) or Carla Wilson Buss (706.542.2996) to request a session.
  • Need Help on the Weekends or After 5:00? Visit the Ask a Librarian link on the Libraries’ Homepage to get help in the evenings and on the weekends. Nadine Cohen & Carla Wilson Buss are always happy to help, but when they can’t be reached, head for the link!

  • The Tale of the Sundial: Gilbert Head (the GIL catalog is not actually named for him, just for the record) and Steven Brown of the Hargrett Library are featured in the newest issue of Columns as they helped identify a long-lost sundial that belongs on the Navy School Campus.
  • Gone with the Wind: The University of Texas is seeking to restore the costumes from the film Gone with the Wind. The Hargrett Library has a large collectionof Margaret Mitchell’s papers, including photographs from the making of GWTW.
  • Keith Richards, Librarian. Being a librarian is so cool that Keith Richards wants to join our ranks. Check it out (a little library humor) on our Libraries blog
  • Make a Date with a Librarian: Nadine Cohen (706.542.6708) and Carla Wilson Buss (706.542.2996) would love to come to your classes to talk about using Libraries’ resources for research. Libraries’ News

  • Libraries’ Orientations: Nadine Cohen (706.542.6708) and Carla Wilson Buss (706.542.2996) are available to come to department meetings/graduate student orientations/student groups to talk BRIEFLY about Libraries’ services. We won’t take up the entire time, just nudge the door open for a few minutes. Give us a call and let the Libraries make your life easier.
  • Curriculum Materials Library Hours: The CML has reduced hours during intersession. The current hours are 8:00-5:00, M-F; Closed Saturday and Sunday until August 16th. For the complete listing of hours, please visit our website. The bookdrop is still available and we can accept all Libraries’ materials.
    • We did find some books propped on the front door of Aderhold the other morning. While we appreciate their return, hoping we’ll discover them on the sidewalk isn’t the best plan…
  • Graduate Students and Faculty Library Accounts: Faculty members who work with graduate assistants (or another designated person) may want to consider a “proxy borrower” library account. This allows patrons to send someone to pick up library materials and those materials are charged to the patron, not to the person collecting them. More information is available here.
  • Faculty Deliveries from the Main and Science Libraries: During the intersession faculty may still request materials from the Main and Science Libraries to be delivered to the CML. Deliveries will not be made to Ramsey or River’s Crossing, however. Click here for more information.

Libraries’ News

  • Changes in Copyright Law: The Library of Congress announced changes in copyright law. One change of note regards use of media in education. Complete information is available from the Library of Congress.
  • Curriculum Materials Library Hours: After classes end on July 30th, the CML will change to intersession hours. Beginning August 1st and through August 13th, the CML will be open 8:00am-5:00pm and will be CLOSED on these Sundays—August 1st, August 8th and August 15th. August 16th the hours will return to normal: 8am-8pm M-Th, 8:00-5:00pm Fridays, Closed on Saturdays and open Sundays 1:00pm-5:00pm. Please visit the CML page for complete information.
  • CML Access During the Second Floor Construction Project: Construction doesn’t stop the CML! The bookdrop, behind the plastic sheeting, is still open. So, even if the CML is closed, you can still return ALL Libraries’ materials to the CML. Materials from the Main and Science Libraries, as well as GIL Express items may be placed in the bookdrop and we’ll take it from there.
  • Faculty Deliveries During the Intersession: Because the CML is on the Libraries’ “mail run”, COE faculty may continue to request delivery of Libraries’ materials TO THE CML during the intersession.  Intersession service does not include delivery to River’s Crossing or Ramsey, however. Full faculty delivery service will return at the beginning of the Fall Semester.
  • Reserve Materials at the CML: If you have materials you wish to place on reserve for your students for Fall Semester, please consider placing them on reserve at the CML. Jason Matherly, the CML Coordinator, will be happy to assist you with this.
  • Librarians Love Invitations: Librarians are just shameless. We actually ASK for invitations. If you would like to receive better papers from your students, with sources beyond Wikipedia, and if you would like your students to think more critically about the sources they use, invite a librarian to your class to demonstrate to your class how to search quicker and better. Nadine Cohen and Carla Wilson Buss will be there in a flash. Go on. Ask us.

  • Library Information Tutorials for COE Departments: Available from the CML homepage under “Web Tutorials” are web pages designed for the COE and tailored for each department. There are tips on getting help with your research, how to search in GIL and GALILEO and selected reference materials.
  • From the Libraries’ Archives: This note comes from the University Archivist Emeritus, Steven Brown. Construction on the Libraries’ Special Collection Building is underway. A webpage for the building is up http://www.libs.uga.edu/sclb/index.html and on that one can view pictures from the webcam.

As we start this new construction for the university and raise a cup of tea to toast its success…. Late in 1903 the university’s Science Hall was gutted by fire and engineering professor Charles Strahan was given the “other-duties-as-assigned” task of assembling a labor pool to clear away the site so construction could begin on its replacement. As 1904 dawned, University Chancellor Walter B. Hill wrote of the delays in Strahan’s project due to the ready availability of liquor at the Athens Dispensary, then the officially-sanctioned retailer of alcohol in the Classic City.

From Hill’s January 4, 1904, letter to Peter Meldrim of the Board of Trustees: In regard to hastening the work of clearing away the debris of Science Hall, it will give me pleasure to aid Mr. Strahan in any way in my power. During the Christmas holidays the dispensary has been responsible for an almost total stoppage of labor of every kind. I hope however that the sobering up will commence with the New Year and will take the liberty of suggesting to Mr. Strahan the idea of calling in labor from the contiguous country places. Chancellor Hill, in addition to being a top administrator in education, was a major voice in the Georgia temperance movement long before the Athens Dispensary derailed his construction timetable. We don’t know if the 1903 bacchanal simply died out, leaving a hung-over Athens workforce for Strahan or if he was forced to recruit clean-living country folk, but Terrell Hall eventually did rise on the Science Hall site.
Those who have braved the heat for our Asset Week Libraries History Tour may recall that Terrell frugally incorporates the basement walls and cornerstone of its well-charred 1897 predecessor.
