• Intersession Hours: With the end of finals, intercession hours are probably over for most people, but for the Libraries Intersession hours are just beginning. The CML will be open 8:00-5:00 until Maymester begins and will be closed Sunday May 12. The other libraries will also have reduced hours. For complete information, please see the Hours section of the Libraries’ Homepage.

• Don’t Forget About Book drops: When you have an armful of books and the Libraries are closed, you don’t have to lug that stack back to your car. The CML, Main & Science Libraries all have book drops where you can return the materials you’ve finished with. This may be too much library geekiness, but you’ll be happy to know that when Libraries staff retrieve materials from the book drops, the return date is backdated to the last day we were open and your account is kept up-to-date. You may also return any University System book to any of the UGA Libraries and those books will find their way home. Interlibrary Loan materials, however MUST be returned to the library where you picked up the material.

• GALILEO Password: Get ready. The GALILEO password changes frequently in the summer to accommodate the various sessions. The quickest way to get the password is to visit the Libraries’ Homepage>>GALILEO Password.

• Proxy Borrowers—Cut Your Schlepping Time: If you are going to be working with new research assistants, you may want to consider establishing a Proxy Account A Proxy Account lets you send someone to pick up materials in your name. The materials are charged to your account, but you don’t have to do the schlepping. We can process these accounts in the CML, saving you even more time.

• Graduating? First of all, congratulations. Now, please take a look at this blog entry from the Libraries to make sure everything goes smoothly for you on the big day. Return items you have checked out, pay any fines you may have lingering and then go out and conquer the world. Or at least a small portion of it. And good luck!

• Digital Public Library of America – Now Open: The UGA Libraries are proud to announce the opening of the Digital Public Library of America. The collection consists of digital materials from major universities, federal holdings & local & regional materials. See the Digital Library of Georgia Blog for more information. It’s really cool. Go ahead, click on the link.

• GALILEO Passwords: The GALILEO password for UGA changed last week because someone thoughtfully tweeted the old one. I hope that person doesn’t apply to the CIA anytime soon. To get the new password, visit the GALILEO Password site on the Libraries’ Homepage.

• GALILEO Password for the K12 Community: The K12 Community on GALILEO has a separate password and that one changes every month, by design. Please contact me to get it. If you would like to have this emailed to you directly, please contact GALILEO to be added to the list. Having the password allows faculty & students to see the GALILEO collection from the point of view of public schools. Their databases are different, so it’s useful to share this with budding teachers.

• Libraries’ Homepage Usability Testing: If you would like to have input on the Libraries’ Homepage design & usability, you can participate in usability testing and also get a $10 print/copy card. (What else can we offer you? Free books? Been there, done that.) If you are interested, and can spare an hour at some point between May 13th and May 24th, please contact Deborah Stanley for more information.

• Paws & Relax: Nadine Cohen, intrepid Librarian, has organized Paws & Relax, bringing therapy dogs to North Campus, May 1st & 2nd, to help students (and faculty/staff) calm down a bit. Visit the Libraries’ Blog for more information & a schedule of which canines will be available when. Pugs, collies, and some visitors from the shelter at Animal Control will be there.

• Free Viewing of New PBS Documentary: Tonight at midnight, PBS is offering the Age of Champions National Online Premiere, where the public can watch the entire film, for free, on their website for ten days. The film is about five competitors, who are up to the age of 100, competing for gold medals at the National Senior Olympics.

• GALILEO Password – Unscheduled Password Change: The GALILEO password was made public & is being changed. Visit the Libraries’ Homepage, and click on GALILEO Password to get the new one. Sorry for the inconvenience.

• Take a Doggie Break: If you’re feeling stressed over Finals (whether by the thought of taking them or by the thought of having to grade them all), join the Libraries for a little Dog Therapy, or “Paws & Relax”. Thanks to Reference & Instruction Librarian, Nadine Cohen for making this possible.

• Reserve Materials: The deadlines for placing materials on reserve (physical copies or e-reserves) in the Main or Science Libraries are: April 30th for Summer Session classes and July 8th for Fall classes. Physical materials may also be placed on reserve in the CML by contacting Jason Matherly and the CML is smaller so we can be a bit more flexible with dates.

• Congratulations to CML Student Worker Sara Black: One of our new student workers in the CML, Sara Black, has been awarded a Udall Scholarship, for her work on environmental issues. See the article in this week’s Columns for all the info.

• Spring, Summer, Fall – the Circle of Library Instruction Continues: Despite the notion that we’re closed in the Summer and the questions we frequently get, “Are you here in the summer?” we actually ARE here in the Summer. (Heck, we’re open on Christmas Eve…) Make use of that fact by inviting librarians to your classes for a topic–specific, specially tailored instruction session on making the most of the Libraries. • First Person Interviews Set for April 19th: If you’re a fan of NPR’s StoryCorps, you’ll like this. The next interviews for the First Person Project, a new oral history series documenting the experiences of everyday Georgians, are set for April 19 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the Richard B. • Support Educational Opportunities for Women: The Jeannette Rankin Foundation, which provides scholarships to women aged 35 and over to help raise themselves from poverty, is holding a quilt raffle to provide even more scholarships. The tickets are $5 each, with a discount for packets of tickets and are on sale online. Jeannette Rankin Scholars go on to become physical therapists, teachers, accountants, social workers, doctors and join the ranks of thousands of other occupations. These women don’t just change their own lives, but the lives of their families and of their communities. Get inspired by reading their stories. The drawing is April 14th.

• UGA Libraries’ Media Archives preserves only known films of stage actress: Oh the hidden gems in our collections. According to UGA Today, “Three reels of early home movies showing theater actress Annie Russell (1864-1936)-the only moving images of her known to exist-have been discovered in the University of Georgia Libraries’ Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection, the only public institution in Georgia devoted entirely to preserving moving images.” Click here to read more.

• Hargrett Library Announces Four New Collections: From the Libraries’ Blog comes news that the Hargrett Library, housed in the new Special Collections Library, has acquired four new collections—The Arthur W. McDonald collection of theatre engravings and playbills; Sir John Glubb’s letters to Diane Hanson; the Marie Mellinger Collection and the Frances Bryant Godwin papers.

• Also from the Blog 2nd Annual Donald Hollowell Lecture, April 3rd: Join the School of Social Work and the Foot Soldier Project for Civil Rights Studies and Research for the 2nd Annual Donald L. Hollowell Lecture, on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, in the Auditorium of the Special Collections Library, room 271. The guest speaker will be Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Director General of the Foreign Service for the US State Department. • Library Staff Association Book & Bake Sale: If you have books you would like to, shall we say, transfer to someone else’s collection, or if you would like to acquire more for yourself, April 11th is your big chance. Donations of books, DVDs, CDs, VHS Tapes, video games, maps and computer software are gladly accepted. And, as part of that public service spirit of the Libraries, our very own Donnie Summerlin will pick up your donations from you. • Online Math Help: A company which produces many of the GACE exams, Mometrix, has launched an online Math Help Service. This is a free resource for students and teachers. Mometrix plans to add more instructional videos over time. Since this is a new venture for them, they welcome any feedback.

• K-12 GALILEO Password: The K-12 GALILEO Community password changes every month. If you or your students would like to access the GALILEO resources aimed at school students and you need that password, please let me know.

• Tax Forms: The CML has Federal 1040 & 1040EZ forms as well as the Federal Tax Guide for 2012. Georgia forms will not be available in the Libraries this year. Tax forms are also available at Federal tax forms – http://www.irs.gov/ and Georgia – https://etax.dor.ga.gov/

• Library Instruction: Unlike tax time, library instruction time is never out of season. Anytime your students need research help, it’s Library Instruction Time. Contact Nadine Cohen or Carla Wilson Buss to schedule an instruction session.

• Spring Break: Yes, the CML will be open over Spring Break. We will be open Monday–Friday of that week, 8:00–5:00. March 10th & March 17th we will be closed. The book drop is open if Aderhold is, so materials can still be returned. Come on by. • New Databases Available in the Hargrett Library : The Hargrett Library, housed in the Special Collections Library, has opened the Historical Maps Database. This collection features more than 1,000 historical maps, some dating to the sixteenth century. Georgia materials make up the bulk of the collection.

  • In addition, the Hargrett has released a new database of Historical Broadsides. The Libraries own more than 2000 of these, dated from 1746 to the 1980s.

• Educator’s Resources from the Smithsonian: If you’re looking for something new to spark your teaching, consider the Smithsonian’s website! They’ve got plenty of information, including this page just for educators.

• The Library of Congress: Don’t forget the Library of Congress as a place for millions of digital images for use in the classroom and beyond.

• Speaking of Digital Images: The Digital Library of Georgia has a wealth of information on every aspect of Georgia life & history.

• What’s New on the ERIC Document Situation: A recent post on the Education & Social Science Librarians’ listserv had information on the ERIC documents that were removed last year from the digital collection of documents. Less than 2% of the total number of ERIC documents have been scanned and of those scanned, less that 75% have been made available. Scanning is based solely on patron requests. In the summer the folks at ERIC expect to start scanning newly-released documents as well as continuing with the requested titles. They expect the entire process to take five years. There are currently 60,000 user-requested documents waiting to be scanned. The good news is that they expect to have all the user-requested titles available in the next six months to a year. The other really good news is that we still have the microfiche of most of these documents in the basement of the Main Library, filed by ED number.

• Library Staff Association Flower Sale: The annual LSA Flower and Bake Sale will be held on Thursday, February 14 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at the Main Library, Science Library, and the MLC. Lots of good bakers work in the Libraries, if that is the inspiration you need. Portions of proceeds from LSA events benefit local charities.

• New Books in the CML: For a number of years we’ve displayed the newly arrived titles near the door into the CML. This week we added a section for Spanish Language Titles. After these titles are off the “new” shelf, they’ll be shelved by call number and not separated. ¡ Ven a ver nuestros libros nuevos!

• Guided Readers: Recent new acquisitions to the Curriculum Materials section of the CML include the set of Guided Readers from the Scholastic Guided Reader Program. These are found in CurMat PE 1117. Come take a look!
