• Three New GALILEO Databases: If you’ve been dying to know more about primates, we can help. A new GALILEO database is All the World’s Primates. Two other new databases are The Chicago Manual of Style & Encyclopedia of Major Marketing Campaigns. Learn more about these, including getting a stable url to which you can link by visiting the GALILEO @ UGA link and searching by name.

• Government Websites & the Shutdown: Oh, this Shutdown…. It’s closed government websites which you may have need of. Here’s a link to a post on the Libraries’ blog about what’s closed. ERIC at the .gov site is closed, but you can still access MOST of ERIC’s materials in the EBSCO version we host in GALILEO. Access to ERIC documents (the EDs, not the EJs in the citation information) may be limited. The Libraries kept the microfiche EDs from 1966—2004 and those are available in the basement of the Main Library.

• Maintenance Scheduled for Wiley Online Library & Cochrane Library: A little advanced warning that Wiley Online Library & the Cochrane Library, two GALILEO databases, will be unavailable  September 28, 2013, approximately 4 hours between 09:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. There will also be some delays to online publishing between September 25 to 28, 2013.

• GACE Exams: Please advise your students that the print copies GACE Study Guides have been sent to the Repository as they are out of date. The links to the ebook-versions of these guides will still be active, so user discretion is advised. The CML page now only hosts a link to the State online study resources for the new exams.

• Peabody Decades: The Peabody Collection is hosting a series of screenings from the collection based on Twentieth Century decades. September 19th is the next offering, World War II: The Perilous Flight” Visit the link for more information and a complete listing of the Peabody Decades screenings.

• Eugene Odum: More from the Special Collections Building! The SCB is hosting an exhibit to celebrate the centennial of Odum’s birth, now through December. Eugene Odum is the father of modern ecology and the Libraries are proud to have his papers. Visit GIL to see all that we have on this amazing scientist.

• Library Instruction Sessions….Still going. Just like the Energizer Bunny, librarians Nadine Cohen and Carla Wilson Buss are still going and still able to come to classes for research assistance as well meeting students & faculty one-on-one for research.

• GALILEO for the K-12 Set: Are you aware of the terrific resources available to the K-12 Community in GALILEO? Divided into three categories, Kids (K-5th), Teen (6th-8th) and High School (9th-12th), databases are available for specific subjects as well as general topics. • Ebook Survey: An ebook survey has been posted to several lists, including COE/fyi, the COE graduate student list & the undergraduate list. It’s short and will only take a few minutes to complete. The objective to find out what the College of Ed thinks about ebooks & Libraries’ policies on them. Do you want more ebooks? What do you expect from an ebook in terms of usability and readability? What matters to you matters to us. The link for the survey is in the email in the various lists. Please send replies by September 27th. And thank you very much for your time. Questions? Please ask.

• More Puppets: The CML has received more new puppets, including a penguin (who is more of a stuffed toy, but he does like to read to!) and whole families of puppets. Stop by and see them.

• New Puppets in the CML: Have you ever been reading a book about penguins and just craved a life-sized penguin to share the sofa with you? Now’s your chance. The CML is now home to a life-sized penguin who longs to be read to. We’ve also gotten several new puppets, including three new multicultural puppet families. All of our puppets, even the Eric Carle finger puppets and the owl, are available for check-out. We also have many puppet-related materials to inspire your own puppet shows.

• New Semester & New GALILEO Password: Ah, what would a new semester be without a new GALILEO password? An old one, I guess. The UGA GALILEO password will change NEXT MONDAY, August 19th, and if no one posts it to Facebook or Twitter, is scheduled to remain in effect until January 3rd, 2014.

• New “New Book” List: The Ps have been added to the lists of new books. Literacy often shows up in the Ps, so this list will now appear weekly as well. The Ps are also where you’ll find literature and books on language. Visit the Main Library’s third floor to see them in person.

• Activist Guide to Archiving Video: Ruta Abolins, Director of the Peabody Archives & Media Department in the Libraries, shared this link from the Library of Congress. To quote from Mike Ashenfelder’s article, “The human rights organization, witness.org, — who gave a presentation at Digital Preservation 2013 — just published The Activists’ Guide to Archiving Video. Though this guide is intended for human rights activists, it covers all aspects of digital video archiving so thoroughly that it is of value to anyone and everyone, from individuals archiving their personal videos to organizations developing digital video archives.” Start & film your own revolution.

• NPR & Human Books: Here’s a link for an interesting article from All Things Considered about how some public libraries are, well, fishing for patrons and expanding their collections of resources to include Human Books.

• Bulldog Book Club Schedule: If you’re looking for a book club to join, the Libraries can help. Join the Bulldog Book Club. It’s open to everyone and free. Of course.

• Where ARE Those New Books? With all the renovations to the Libraries of late, you may be having trouble finding the New Books shelves.

• In the Main Library, they are to the left when you enter. Go past the entrance to ‘Tween the Pages and the New Books will be proudly displayed in the first few shelves. The Leisure Collection is next, followed by Current Periodicals.

• In the Science Library, the New Books are also to the left as you enter the gates, just past the display cases.

• The CML’s New Books are to the right of the Service Desk, cleverly marked, New Books.

• E-School News & Pearson’s Searchable Catalog of Open Educational Resources: E-School News reports that Pearson’s, the textbook publisher, has collected more than 700,000 free resources for educators.

• August 1st is… William Clark’s birthday. Lewis was born August 1st, 1770 in Caroline County, Virginia and gained fame as part of the team of explorers, Lewis & Clark. As the name suggests, it’s free and according to the website, “The Federal Registry for Educational Excellence (FREE) makes it easier to find digital teaching and learning resources created and maintained by the federal government and public and private organizations.” Over 181,000 resources are available here.

• Here Be Fiction: If you’re looking for reviews and info on children’s lit that may not appear in the usual journals, this is your lucky day. Here Be Fiction A collaborative effort of Mackin Educational Resources and with the support of School Library Journalallows access to ebook previews & reviews. • Brown Media Archives: The balance between federal and state power is a recurring theme in the American political dialogue as seen in this 1962 clip of HEW Secretary Anthony J. • Fall Reserves: It is not too late to submit a Course Reserve list for Fall semester 2013.  Lists we received before the deadline of July 8, 2013 are guaranteed to be on reserve before Fall semester begins but lists received after the deadline will be processed as quickly as possible.
