Libraries News

  • Confused About E-books? What can you download? CAN you download from ebooks? How do you “check out” an e-book? For pity’s sake, how do you even FIND them? Well, we have some answers for you. Amber Prentiss, Reference Librarian in the Miller Learning Center, has put together a very handy guide to E-books. It may not answer every single question you may have, but it answers a whole lot of them. If not, contact Amber.

  • ERIC Documents Update: Access to full text in the ERIC Collection continues to increase as restricted PDFs are cleared and restored online on a weekly basis, and newly indexed full-text materials are added daily. As of May 30, 2013 nearly 71,400 PDFs were available online for download, including all releasable materials published from 2005-forward and peer-reviewed full-text materials.

ERIC will continue to accept requests to restore access to older materials via the online form, and maintain the updated list of released documents. The Spotlight and alert areas on the ERIC home page at eric.ed.gov are kept up-to-date to keep you informed of the latest developments.

    • Please remember: The Libraries own the microfiche for ERIC documents until 2004. These are stored, by ERIC number (that six-digit number in the reference) in the basement of the Main Library. You can copy & scan these documents and there are staff members in the basement to assist you. It’s a lot quicker to take the Orbit bus to the Main Library than to wait several weeks for your restoration request to be processed. Just sayin’.

  • K-12 GALILEO Password: The K-12 GALILEO Community’s password will change on July 1st. If you need it, ask Carla Wilson Buss or join the GALILEO email list.

  • Keep Librarians Busy in the Summer: Yes, Virginia, librarians are here in the summer. Keep us off the streets by scheduling an instruction session for your class, whether face-to-face or online, early in the morning or early in the evening. Nadine Cohen & Carla Wilson Buss are happy to lend a hand.
