Libraries News

  • New GALILEO Password: The GALILEO Password changed on June 17th. Visit the Libraries’ Homepage >> GALILEO Password link to get the new one (or to be reminded what it is when you need it). You can always ask for help.

  • Discarded Books, Recovered Nostalgia: From the New York Times, a charming photo essay, about books that have been pulled from collections.

  • Two New Collections Open in the Hargrett Library: The Hargrett Library is pleased to announce the opening of the Marguerite Hodgson family papers and William B. Conway family papers. Marguerite Hodgson’s family had a carriage making business in Athens in 1842. William B. Conway was in the Virginia Calvary in the Civil War and moved to Athens in 1891 where he practiced medicine.

  • ATHFest Tours of the Special Collections Library: If you missed the guided tours of the Special Collections Library when they first opened or if you would just like to go back for more, you’re in luck. To celebrate AThFest, the staff of the Special Collections Library will offer free guided tours of the exhibits, Thursday, June 20th through Saturday, June 22nd at 2:00pm. One exhibit, which opened May 1st and runs until December 15th, is “Now & Then: 1973”. Some of us, of course, can just open our high school yearbooks to see 1973, but if a trip to the attic isn’t in your future, consider a trip to Special Collections. It’s not as hot and will have fewer spiders clinging to things.

  • Lost & Found: People visit the CML and often leave little offerings for us. Their own books or sunglasses, for example. While this is a nice thought, you can visit the Libraries without donating anything to us. These items are sent down to 232 Aderhold, OIT’s Media Services Office, where they have a lovely collection of items which have become separated from their owners. Two current offerings are: The Great Railroad Race: The Diary of Libby West and a pair of groovy (see above) sunglasses. Please mention this to your students or friends and help reunite book and owner.
