Main Library Closings: No, these are not permanent, but there is some maintenance work coming that will require the closing of the Main Library. Here’s all the info from Kristin Nielsen, Head of Reference:
-
The entire building will be closed this Saturday, December 15.
-
The annex (i.e., the newer taller back part) will be closed on Monday, December 17. This means that nearly all book stacks will be inaccessible. Nobody (even staff) will be allowed to enter the annex, so books cannot be retrieved for patrons that day. The Media Department and the Maps & Gov Info Library will also be closed on Monday.
-
What will be available: the public workstations, scanners and printers in the front of the building; Reference, Access Services, and ILL desks will be staffed; and ‘Tween the Pages will be open.
-
A small part of the collection is in the old building (about 75% of Current Periodicals and Reference; a teeny part of the LBs; some federal documents).
-
New Microfilm Scanners in the Main Library: The Main Library has three new microformat scanners available for public use in the basement. These scanners create pdfs from microfilm, microfiche, and microcards; the pdfs can be saved to a USB drive or emailed. Printing is also available with Bulldog Bucks or a VTS card.
-
GIL Express Not Available: The GIL Express service will be unavailable during the USG Winter Break from December 12, 2012 to January 2, 2013.
-
Wireless Printing Now Available in the Libraries: Wireless printing is now available at the UGA Libraries (Main, Science, and the MLC) as well as several other locations around campus. Patrons can now not only print from a laptop, but also a mobile device (Android and Apple apps are available). Color and double-sided printing are also available via this service. If you would like to know more including cost information and where the wireless printing kiosks are located on campus, please see the following website:

The CML is not on the list, but maybe someday…
-
CML Hours: The CML will have shortened hours during intersession and will close with the rest of the University December 25–January 1. The hours will be:
-
Weekdays, December 12-December 24: 8:00–5:00
-
Closed: December 15, 16, 23, 25–31; January 1 & January 5 & 6
-
January 2–4: 8:00–5:00
-
Normal hours will resume January 7th
-
Returning Books During the Break: Even when the Libraries are closed, you can still return library materials by using the book drops. Main & Science Libraries have outdoor book drops & the CML’s drop is next to the CML entrance. All returned materials are back dated to the last day we were open.
-
Library Instruction in the Spring: I still can’t used to calling January Spring, but I also can’t believe you can plant pansies in the winter, so what do I know? I do know that now is a good time to schedule Carla Wilson Buss or Nadine Cohen to come to your classes in the Spring Semester to help your students with their research.
