Libraries News

  • It’s Been a Hard Week in Lake Wobegon This Week: I hope Garrison Keillor will forgive me for borrowing and modifying his famous line, but the Libraries HAVE had a bad week. The GIL system has been having a state–wide upgrade and UGA’s turn was last weekend. Things haven’t gone as planned, but most patron services are available again. GIL Express is still on hiatus, but you can return items even though you cannot yet request new ones. If you experience any difficulties with processes, please contact the CML at 706.542.2957 or 706.542.2996 and we’ll see if we can help. After hours, please contact Access Services at 706.542.3256. Everything is supposed to be restored by this weekend. Please accept the apologies of the Libraries for the inconveniences of this past week. Visit the Libraries’ blog to keep up with what’s new with GIL.

  • Moving? If you’re moving your office and wonder what to do with all those books and journals that you no longer need, here are a few suggestions:

    • Books: The Libraries will accept gift donations. If you would like a tax credit, please include your name with any donations.

    • Journals: The Libraries cannot accept donations of journals, unfortunately.

    • Other Donation Locations: Libraries in the developing world desperately need materials, even slightly older and used materials. The American Library Association has compiled a list of links to various organizations which accept donations. For international donations, the ALA also has a page with information and helpful tips.

  • Memorial Day Hours: The Libraries will be closed on Monday, May 28th for Memorial Day. The Curriculum Materials Library will also be closed Sunday, May 27th.

    • Please remember that you can use the bookdrops to return materials, including GIL Express (but not Interlibrary Loan). There are bookdrops located at the Main Library in the parking lot, the Science Library bin is in the lobby of Boyd Graduate Studies, and the CML has a bookdrop to the right of the CML’s door. You may return any State library’s materials to any of these bookdrops.

  • Teaching This Summer? Summer students need assistance with research just as much as students during the rest of the year. Luckily, Nadine Cohen (706.542.6708) & Carla Wilson Buss (706.542.2996) are at work during the summer. Call or click to schedule a session to help your students with the research process. It’s free.

  • School Library Journal Summerteen Online Event: School Library Journal is hosting a day–long online event, Summerteen: A celebration of Young Adult Books. Early bird pricing for this event, scheduled for August 9th, 10:30–5:30 EDT, ends July 2nd. Visit their site for complete information.

  • GALILEO K–12 Password: The GALILEO K–12 Community has a different password than the UGA GALILEO Community and it changes each month. Please contact Carla Wilson Buss for the password. This is an excellent way to introduce your students to the resources available in the schools.

  • Main & Science Library Renovations: Construction continues in both the Main & Science Libraries. To follow the progress, visit the Libraries’ blog on the Libraries’ Homepage and look under News & Events.
