Libraries News

  • Lost & Found: It’s the end of the semester, so all thoughts turn to Lost & Found. Or, at least, to clearing OUT Lost & Found. The CML has a lovely little collection of books and insulated cups which have made their way to us. We would like to help them find their way home before they are donated to charity. Pls remind your students to check with us so we can witness the joyous celebration, as owner and property are reunited.

  • Library of Congress & American Culture: A recent article in the Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/2012/04/22/gIQABtcoaT_story.html reveals how the Library of Congress works to preserve the valuable documents of American history. One item you may not have thought of as worthy of preservation is the video game from 1990, The Rise of the Dragon. Follow the link above for more information and many thanks to Ruta Abolins, director of the Libraries’ Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection, for sending this along.

  • Confederate Constitution On Display April 26th: The 12-foot-long Constitution will be displayed from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the second floor gallery space of the Russell Special Collections Building. The fragility of the document, written chiefly by Athenian T.R.R. Cobb, and its one-of-a-kind importance make permanent display impossible. An image of the document and a transcription can be found at: http://www.libs.uga.edu/hargrett/selections/confed/const.html

    • Civil War letters, diaries and photographs from 1862 will also be displayed in the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript gallery in observance of the sesquicentennial of the war.

    • Other Hargrett Library galleries include exhibits on Colonial Georgia, the Native American experience, natural history and women’s history.

  • For more information, contact the Special Collections Libraries at 706-542-7123 or hargrett@uga.edu
