LATINO TUTORING PROGRAMS

“The most eye-opening and rewarding of all my experiences this semester”
“My eyes have been opened wider to the Latino culture”

“Being a part of this community, and seeing what positive things go on has really opened my eyes and taught me many things”

“I truly believe that there is no greater education than service learning; experience such as this, is something you could never learn from text books or multiple choice exams. You are able to learn and grow as a student while doing some good in our community and helping make the future brighter for many students; what more could you ask for?”

University of Georgia students are encouraged to take part in tutoring and mentoring programs serving the Athens, Georgia-area Latino communities. Programs serve mostly elementary and middle school students in both school and community programs, and provide them with homework assistance, social support, and literacy/English development. You can make a difference!

Service-learning tutoring programs began at Oasis Católico in Fall 2003. CLASE took over the coordination of this effort in Fall 2004, and in 2005 extended our support to the Garnet Ridge Boys and Girls Club, and to the then-new Pinewood Library. In 2007, CLASE began additional collaborations with local elementary schools, including Fowler Drive Elementary (2007-09) and Chase St. Elementary, and in 2009-10 supported tutoring at JJ Harris Elementary and Whitehead Rd. Elementary. CLASE also works to research the impact of the tutoring on student achievement.

Partial funding support for tutoring programs was provided during 2008-09 and 2009-10 by a grant from the UGA Parents & Families Association.
