University of Georgia students are encouraged to take part in tutoring and mentoring programs serving the Athens, Georgia-area Latino communities. Programs serve mostly elementary and middle school students in both school and community programs, and provide them with homework assistance, social support, and literacy/English development. You can make a difference!
Service-learning tutoring programs began at Oasis Católico in Fall 2003. CLASE took over the coordination of this effort in Fall 2004, and in 2005 extended our support to the Garnet Ridge Boys and Girls Club, and to the new Pinewood Library. In 2007, CLASE began a major initiative in collaboration with Fowler Drive Elementary School, to research the impact of the tutoring on student achievement.
