CLASE Collaborates with DOE and KSU

CLASE is collaborating with Kennesaw State University, Metro RESA and the Georgia Department of Education on KSU's 7th Annual ESOL Conference, February 26 (middle & high school teacher focus), 27 (elementary school teacher focus), and 28 (administrator focus) in Kennesaw. Dr. Margo Gottlieb will provide keynote presentations each day, plus other experts from schools, universities and the department of education will be on the program. CLASE Spring 2008 Sheltered Instruction Follow-Up Workshop

CLASE's 2008 spring renewal conference was held March 5 at the Georgia Center, and featured as speakers Dr. Kimberly Anderson (REL-SE) and Dr. Kris Gutierrez (UCLA), as well as presentations from Dr. Art Recesso and from participating teams on their progress in implementing sheltering strategies at their schools.

 

On Feb. 22, 2008, UGA's Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education (CLASE), College of Education Dean's Council on Diversity, and the Department of Counseling and Human Development Services sponsored its fourth annual conference for K-12 school counselors, with some 187 attendees. This year's theme was "Diversity Issues in School Counseling: Supporting ALL Georgia's Students," and included a strong Latino themed strand, with presentations including Latino family engagement, helping Latino students succeed, information on scholarships and higher education opportunities, and updates on state legislation impacting Latino students. The day culminated with a panel of UGA and local high school students, who shared their own experiences and recommendations to the counselors.

CLASE Fall 2007 Sheltered Instruction Follow-Up Workshop

CLASE's 2007-08 teams gathered at UGA on Oct. 22 to hear from Dr. Stephanie Stoll Dalton and to share their progress in implementing sheltered instruction for English learners. 2007 CLASE Summer Institute

From June 10-13, CLASE held its fifth annual Summer Institute for teachers, focusing on "sheltering" content-area instruction for English learning students in middle and high school. Over 50 teachers and administrators convened for these four days at Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge, where they met with content-area experts and learned how to modify their instruction to meet the needs of English learners. The seven teams of teachers continue to work with CLASE throughout the year to implement and assess the instructional practices they learned about at the Summer Institute.


First Annual Principals’ Symposium for Latino Success

Sponsored by CLASE, Fulton Co. Schools, and Metro RESA, this Principals' Symposium will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at the Latin American Association in Atlanta. Keynote presenters include Patricia Janiot and Carlos Diaz, with breakouts by Dr. Stan Pogrow, Barbara Beaverson, Dr. Karen Harris, Dr. Bernadette Musetti, Dr. Paul Matthews, Maria Montalvo, and Elida Perez-Knapp, as well as a panel discussion by current administrators highlighting successful programs.

School Counselors as Advocates for Latino(a) Students Conference

CLASE and The Department of Counseling & Human Development Services co-sponsored a one-day conference entitled School Counselors as Advocates for Latino(a) Students, held at the UGA Georgia Center for Continuing Education. The conference featured a keynote by Dr. Sonia Nieto on Counseling Latino Students: Lessons from the Field, luncheon remarks by Dr. Pedro Portes, breakout sessions, and panels of students and counselors.

CLASE Fall Renewal Conference
On October 19, the 2006 Fall Renewal conference was held at the Latin American Association. This year’s teams gathered to hear from story-teller Carmen Agra Deedy, to share updates on their implementation of Action Plans, and to hear about the Gwinnett Steps to College Program.

 

Portes Lecture
As part of the LACSI/UGA Hispanic Heritage Month Distinguished Speaker Series, October 10, Dr. Pedro Portes presented "The Latinos Are Coming! How Closing The Achievement Gap Is Linked to National Survival and Excellence in Education."

 

The Spring Renewal Conference was held March 23rd at the Latin American Association. Attendees heard from Rep. Sam Zamarripa and from Cheryl Wienges, and shared their teams' successes and accomplishments for the year. Download the schedule here.

 

School Counselors as Educational Leaders for Georgia Latino/a K-12 Students Conference, held at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education in Athens, Friday, February 17, 2006. This conference, sponsored by the University of Georgia Department of Counseling and Human Development Services and CLASE, brought together over 175 counselors and others from across the state and included

  • information on the creation of a new “research collaborative” to support counselors as they move forward on implementing ideas
  • effective program models for newcomers and English learners
  • fostering Latino parent engagement
  • college admissions and scholarship support
  • effective strategies for counseling Latino students and families
  • how to develop, implement and assess effective programs
  • and MUCH MORE!

Bilingual School-Parent Liaison Conference, at the Clayton State University Conference Center in Morrow, GA, January 19-20, 2006.
Partial funding for this conference was provided by Georgia PTA. This second annual conference focused on professional development and networking for the critically important bilingual school staff members who link families and schools. The conference provided strategies for enhancing effectiveness as a family-school liaison; it focused on supporting student academic achievement and parent involvement, and highlighted best practice programs. The conference helped foster and nurture a professional community of Latino family support staff, allowing over 200 of them to share with and learn from each other and outside experts.

2005

"Reading and Writing for AYP" Conference, held at the Latin American Association in Atlanta, December 1-2, 2005. This conference, featuring UCLA educational consultant Dennis Parker, focused on supporting literacy (including for English learners). Participants learned Strategic Schooling, a model of school-wide reform that is simple, doable, and guaranteed to give significant results for underachieving students. It is a combination of research-based and field-tested organizational as well as classroom strategies that have helped low-income, high minority schools beat the odds.

October 14, 2005 Fall Follow-Up Workshop for 2005-06 CLASE Teams, at La Mansion. This event featured Dr. Francisco Guajardo of UT-Pan American, Amy Rosen of the Red Clay Writing Project, and lots of sharing of ideas and successes by teams!

2005 International Experience for Second-Year CLASE Educators
With grant funding from the Title II Improving Teacher Quality program, CLASE took Georgia teachers and administrators to either Mexico or Costa Rica in June 2005. The Costa Rica program focused on science education, and the Mexico program focused on social science education.

2004 Bilingual Liaison Conference
CLASE and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College hosted the first-ever Latino Family-School Liaison Conference in Tifton, Georgia in October 2004, with funding support from the Board of Regents Hispanic Pilot Project.
