About CLASE

Why We Are Here

The Latino population in Georgia continues to grow rapidly, resulting in dynamic demographic, economic and social shifts throughout the state. Communities, schools, social service agencies, local governments, businesses and other organizations are challenged to create new ways to serve this population so that they can fully participate in the civic opportunities and economic prosperity of the state.

The University of Georgia takes an active role in helping address these needs. (See Latino Activities @ UGA for more details on the range of initiatives and outreach provided by UGA faculty and staff.)

Educationally, there is a state-wide and national achievement gap between Latino/Hispanic students and non-Hispanic students on a variety of measures, from drop-out and high school completion rates, to high stakes tests such as the CRCT and graduation tests. Ensuring the educational achievement and advancement of Hispanic/Latino youth, both to prosper in and to complete their K-12 education, is CLASE’s focus. Such success should also lead to growth in post-secondary educational enrollment.
