UGA’s Public Service & Outreach Latino Initiative – The Latino Initiative includes information on current events and activities, and co-sponsors campus activities such as the “Padres e Hijos” recruitment weekend, the Steps to College program, and the Latino Advisory Board.
The College of Family and Consumer Sciences – The College of Family and Consumer Scienceswebsite is now available in Spanish. This college offers majors in Child and Family Development, Textiles, Merchandising and Interiors, Foods and Nutrition, Housing and Consumer Economics, and Family and Consumer Sciences Education.
The Goizueta Foundation Graduate Scholars Fund Assistantship – The Goizueta Foundation, funder of CLASE also funds campus-wide graduate assistantships to be awarded to outstanding University of Georgia graduate students dedicated to Latino education. The goal of The Goizueta Foundation Graduate Scholars Fund is to enhance the education and skills of graduate students dedicated to Latino education so that these Scholars will continue to contribute to Latino educational improvement in the United States after they complete graduate school.
The Goizueta Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship – In conjunction with UGA’s Office of Student Financial Aid, the Office of Admissions also awards two Goizueta Foundation Scholarships annually to students who are fluent in Spanish and who are in need of financial assistance. Recipients receive $3,000 per year toward their cost of attendance. Eligible students must demonstrate fluency in both written and spoken Spanish, have family who currently reside in the United States, and demonstrate financial need as determined by the UGA Office of Student Financial Aid.
Hispanic Scholarship Fund Grant – The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is working with UGA and UT-Austin on a multi-year project to raise Latino enrollment and completion. UGA’s campus coordinator is Erin Thompson, ethompson@hsf.net.
Hispanic Student Association – The UGA Hispanic Student Association exists to preserve and promote Hispanic Culture throughout the University of Georgia and the local community; to assist the University of Georgia in drawing in and retaining Hispanic Students within its student population, and to establish a forum and environment that addresses, encourages, and acts upon Hispanic needs and concerns.
Language and Literacy Education at the College of Education – Language and Literacy Education at UGA offers ESOL (English as a Second Language) endorsement in the traditional campus setting and online. This Department also offers a TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) major and minor for undergraduates as well as a TESOL graduate program and other language education programs.
Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute – LACSI (Latin American & Caribbean Studies Institute) brings Latin American and Caribbean culture to the UGA campus by sponsoring educational activities, artistic performances, interdisciplinary research, teaching, and public service projects, in coordination with Latin Americanists from UGA, other Universities, the community at large, and abroad. Latino Youth Leadership Program – The Latino Youth Leadership Program is a statewide program for Latino youth with demonstrated leadership capabilities. The program brings together 25-30 students committed to providing leadership in their home communities.

Programs, recruitment efforts, outreach activities, and conferences are just a few of the activities described in this document. Office of Institutional Diversity – The Office of Institutional Diversity seeks to ensure a University of Georgia where people of many different backgrounds and perspectives join together to actively advance knowledge through research and public service and outreach. The Office of Institutional Diversity provides the leadership to establish the University of Georgia as a national and international model in creative ways to address diversity and equity issues in an academic setting.
Students for Latino/a Empowerment – This UGA student organization works to encourage Latina/o youth to graduate high school, expose them to higher education, and to eliminate the borders that prevent Latinas/os from socially and academically progressing.
Study-Abroad Programs in Xalapa, Mexico – The University of Georgia has a long-term relationship with the University of Veracruz in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. Several different venues exist for UGA students to experience the Xalapa area.

Teachers for English Language Learners (TELL) – The Teachers for English Language Learners (TELL) program is designed to increase the number of highly qualified bilingual teachers in Georgia’s public schools. Non-certified teachers and paraprofessionals who are bilingual are awarded scholarships and other support services to earn professional certification. In return, they must commit to teaching three years in a high-need school in Georgia.
Tutoring and Mentoring K-12 Latino Students – CLASE coordinates opportunities for UGA students to tutor and mentor Athens-area Latino K-12 students. Since Fall 2004, hundreds of university students have provided tutoring and social and academic support at venues such as the Pinewood Library branch, and Garnet Ridge Boys & Girls Club, as well as at local schools. University participants are able to receive academic credit for their service learning via a class by CLASE Co-Director Dr. Paul Matthews, but more importantly, they gain direct, hands-on experience with Latino students and families, helping dispel stereotypes and prepare them for serving a diverse Georgia upon graduation.

UGA Department of Romance Languages – The Department of Romance Languages at the University of Georgia offers challenging graduate and undergraduate programs in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Romance Languages leading to A.B., M.A., M.A.T. and Ph.D. degrees. The faculty comprises a full range of specialists offering courses in all literary periods and genres as well as linguistics, culture, and theory. In addition, the Department offers many specialized courses and advanced seminars.
