About CLASE
Goals & Beliefs
CLASE works to offer top-quality research and professional development opportunities for in-service and pre-service educators, focusing on increasing Latino student achievement in Georgia.
We believe…
- That education for all is a fundamental civil right, as well
as a critical vehicle for economic and social advancement for the state
- That it is especially important to focus on educational success
for the relatively new Latino population in Georgia, to avoid the creation
of a disenfranchised and under-educated first generation of new residents
- That Latino students and families bring worthwhile and important
experiences, strengths, and values to their educational interactions,
and that a “deficiency” viewpoint towards such students
is unwise and unfair
- That development and maintenance of students’ first language,
and pride in students’ heritage cultures, should be supported
and encouraged as a strength, a tool, and an important cultural touchstone
- That the most successful educational solutions are those which
- include and engage parents and families, and that demonstrate awareness
of cultural considerations,
- facilitate a school- and team-based approach to improving Latino
education, rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all “solution”,
and
- creatively involve and leverage contributions from partners from
academia, K-12 schools, and government, non-profit, and community
venues
- That we can, do, and will make a difference for
schools, teachers, families, students, and the state of Georgia!
