ELAN 4620/6620 Service-Learning Course

ELAN 4620/6620 Service-Learning Course

Dr. Matthews offers a course each semester to support tutors and to deepen their knowledge about effective tutoring at these venues. ELAN 4620/6620, ESOL Service-Learning, is offered for 1-3 credit hours (repeatable to 6 total).

For Fall 2008, the course will be held Fridays 10:10-11:00. In addition to the class component, students provide 1-3 afternoons per week of tutoring Latino students at approved community or school locations.

Participants must have schedule availability and transportation for about 2 hours of tutoring between 3 and 6 p.m. (depending on program venue) for 1-3 afternoons each week.

Students must provide 2 hours of tutoring (1 afternoon) each week per credit hour registered, in addition to the academic component of the course. It is also possible to do 2 afternoons/week of tutoring plus a special project, for the 3-hour course.

The 3-hour version of this course fulfills the Franklin College Multicultural requirement. Spanish proficiency is helpful but not required; there are no pre-requisites for this course.

Please contact Dr. Paul Matthews directly with any questions (pmatthew@uga.edu).
