The Ph.D. degree will prepare students for careers in which research and scholarship are central activities. Graduates of this degree program will be prepared to conduct research and formulate policy at major universities, various types of research centers, as well as state departments of education and regional universities and colleges. The typical program of study requires seventy-two to eighty (72-80) semester hours of course work beyond the masters degree. The Program of Workforce Education requires a minimum of 20 hours of core courses, 25 hours of research, and 20 hours of dissertation work. The degree presupposes a minimum of three full years of study beyond the master’s degree and cannot be secured through summer work alone. At least two consecutive semesters (i.e., enrollment for a minimum of 30 hours of consecutive course work included on the program of study) must be spent in full-time resident study on The University of Georgia campus, one of which may be a summer session.
All requirements for this degree, except the dissertation and final oral examination, must be completed within a period of six years. The time requirement begins with the first registration for graduate courses on the student’s program of study.
