Professional Counseling, Specialization: School Counseling, M.Ed.

2006 Cohort

Natalie Gibson

Electronic Portfolio

Level:

Hi!  My name is Natalie Gibson, and I am a member of the 2006 school counseling cohort.  I grew up in Statham, Georgia, right outside of Athens.  I began my college career as an Air Force ROTC cadet at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.  After a year, I made my way back home and graduated from UGA in 1999 with a BSEd in English Education.  I have been teaching for five years.  I spent two years as an 8th grade language arts teacher at Lanier Middle School in Gwinnett County, and I just completed my third year teaching 7th grade reading at West Jackson Middle School in Jackson County.

The most important thing in my life is my family.  I have been married to my wonderful, supportive husband, Brian, for almost six years, and we have a beautiful 2 ½ year-old daughter, Sara.  The challenges of parenting and being a wife while also completing a Master’s degree have been overwhelming at times, but my family makes everything worth the effort.

I decided to become a professional school counselor after moving back to Georgia at the end of my first year of college.  I had always believed that being in the military was the career I wanted.  When that didn’t work out, I put a lot of thoughtful consideration into what was truly important in my life.  Being a school counselor will allow me the privilege of helping high school students make the most important transition of their life and the privilege of helping them make some of the biggest decisions they’ll ever make, both things that I struggled with a great deal.  School counseling will also let me spend time with my real passion, my family.
