Admission & Certification
Admission
Students are admitted to the School Counseling Program once a year to begin in Summer Semester only.
Applicants submit materials to the Graduate School and to the Department of Counseling and Human Development Services. Details concerning required materials and processes are available at the Departmental Admissions site.
International students applying to our program will need to show English proficiency with score of 55 or higher on the TSE.
From written materials, the top candidates are invited in for interviews. Ten to twelve students are then selected to begin the following summer.
Deferment Policy: Due to the high demand of our programs, we will not defer admission from one year to some time in the future. All prospective students are reviewed in light of a cohort model. This requires each years’ applicants to be reviewed as a group and decisions made about admission from that perspective. Anyone who is admitted to any program in our department and decides not to attend will be asked to reapply to that program if they seek admission at a later date.
Certification
The School Counseling Program is designed to meet the standards of the Professional Standards for the state of Georgia. In addition to successful completion of the M.Ed. coursework and field experience, students are required to complete an introductory course in special education and to pass the counseling specialty examination associated with the PRAXIS. Minimum scores are also required on either the GRE or PRAXIS general examinations.
